My panel filter just arrived from PVD (good service only ordered it yesterday) it has a small yellow aerosol can with it, I assume this is for cleaning, does anyone know? No instructions assume its obvious which way around it goes in the air box?

It sounds like it's for oiling the filter before fitting, (Helps trap dirt particles) Blanchie

Is there any easy way to get the cover off the air box, or do you have to disconnect all the pipework etc?

It's a bit of a tight squeeze on the turbo. You might manage it, by removing the induction piping & AMM. But, one of the release clips - there are 4 I think - holding the lid of the airbox down is very close to the bulkhead/firewall and would be a real sod to get back on securely. I found it easier to remove the whole airbox unit by removing the inner wheel arch and getting access from there.

Before you oil it, do a bit of research in VX's MAFS' then make your decision. If it was me, i'd leave it dry! A failing MAFS can result in a new engine.

I second Garys comments, had to take the wheel off & the arch liner to get at the airbox properly. Do this then you can remove the restrictor pipes in the aixbox as well!! Chris

Me too.

It's been speculated that oil on the filter may cause air mass meter failures.

I had a pipercross filter on my old subaru. I also a knock sensor fitted on the engine and a visual unit to see what was happening. After a few months I noticed the irratic knocking for no reason. I dissasembled the air intake unit after hearing about issues with the STI 5/6 to check out my concern. Upon checking the MAFS (Mass Air Flow Sensor) it was coated in a thin coat of goo. I was lucky. A new sensor and a switch back to the STI dry filter and I never saw the problem again. You don't have a visual aide to check for knock. If the sensor goes, your engine could go bang. Not trying to put you off. This may not be as relevant on VX's as it is for STI5/6 scoobs, I don't know as I haven't got my VXT yet, so not looked into it.
