Ah so more on the ETL and Qlikview type front.

Yeppers, exactly that sort of thing. ETL hell is my daily headache at work sometimes.

You will have quite some homework Nev, with todays bi consultant needing to move over to big data, predictive analytics, machine learning and lot's of other cool stuff in that area.

Well I've not even driven Nipper since I got back as I seem to have lost the bug a bit. I have recently bought him some second hand 17" TD Pro Race 1.2 wheels for the front which will hopefully sort out the under-steer I was getting on sharp corners and improve the bump handling a bit. Am picking these up from my brothers' over Xmas and will fit them in a week or so.

Been out hill walking & kayaking quite a bit to get my kicks and now have a dislocated thorax 4 vertebrae from being bashed around underwater. It's a rather painful present for Xmas, however Tramadol is working it's magic!

however Tramadol is working it's magic!

When I woke up in intensive care in May with a fresh 12 inch abdominal incision and the epidural anesthetic had failed, they gave me tramadol (among other things) to sleep. It was like being hit with a cosh.

Yea, it's quite amazing stuff, easy to see why people get addicted in a few days. Morphine is another step up though in my experience - that really blew me away, making my speech slur and lose the timeline.

Ever since carelessly reversing my exhaust tips into a steel shelving unit in my garage last year, the rear of the exhaust silencer has been a bit cracked. Also I've noticed recently that the exhaust wire wool stuffing has been hanging out of the exhaust tips, so today I decided to take the silencer off and take a look.

Once on the bench I could see that metal behind the exhaust tips had become brittle and was now unweldable which I was a bit surprised about, so I cut the entire skin off the top and back of the box to replace it all. Once I gained access to the internals I was a bit staggered to find that the main internal baffle was also terribly brittle and warped and cracked, even though it was made from 1.3mm stainless 304 grade steel. This really was surprising, but I guess it has no external (air) heat sink and sees some terrific heat.

Also the wire wool I had installed had melted in places and become extremely brittle and was crumbing to dust when touched, so that wasn't such a good filler as I had hoped. At least there was more of it left than the fibre glass wadding which was barely even evident in the can any more.

Anyway, short of making a titanium silencer I had no choice but to put a new 304 steel baffle in and weld it all up again, although this time I've welded it in a slightly different way to try and allow it to stress relieve itself a bit. This time there is barely any wadding/wire wool for hi-freq diffusion as it doesn't seem to stand the test of time, so I guess it's going to be a bit noisier. Anyway, hopefully this will last another year of motoring, but I guess the nasty heat effects will just happen again eventually. :(

Here's a pic of the baffle once I'd removed it from the box, showing the cracks and warping it's suffered from, it had lost it's malleability (and weldability) too.

I can't be arsed to test it today, but apparently the weather might even be nice here tomorrow so might go for a test drive and a walk in the hills. I might even get the sound meter out if I can find it.

Bloody hell that is not right.

Heat alone won't cause that.

You have some vibration issues going on there Nev.

Edit: just read it properly, so you suspect work hardening from heat cycling and then cracking due to expansion/contraction?

Yh I would try thicker stainless 1.3mm is pretty thin. Plus if you suspect it’s heat related a titanium exhaust won’t do you any good. They are good at displacing heat quickly but constant heat cycles will cause it to crack and fail. Plus titanium is extremely difficult to weld properly and needs a lot of gas shielding.

What grade SS did you use and did you go to the effort of gas purging?

On mine? Or is that to Nev? If it’s to me I used 304 and gas purged it. I bought the disposable argon bottles of eBay to use for gas purging. Solar flux is crap
