After some thought I'm set on getting drilled and grooved based mainly on the appearance but in an effort to avoid any worries of cracking that some people have mentioned I'm thinking of forking out for the highest spec ones from Camskill for £205 front and the same for the rear with Pagid RS14's (£410 all-round) (http://www.camskill....17b0s1208p53976) Does anyone have any thoughts on these particular discs and pads?

I don't think the plain disks and carbon lorraine cl5+ all round can be beat for stopping ability and money

Plain discs can also be sourced for under £70 for all four if you buy carefully. Not sure how much they work out in the "deal" price though.

I agree, I will be going that route this year, last year I put on plain cheap disks and RS14's and have no bad words to say about the setup, brakes are up to everything I have thrown at them, basicly moving to CL on price and good reports from people I consider to know what they are talking about. Personally I'd rather stay with the cheap plain disks and change more often (every pad change).

I have plain discs (Autovaux) and RS14s and wouldn't want for more.. I do hear the CL pads are excellent as well, but either way boggo discs are all you need.. :) thumbsup

They do look good but there is no real benefit and they can crack. If you want the look go grooved and it also has a benefit. But as others have said, you can't go wrong, with plain discs, especially for the price. If you get heat issues then wider vaned discs, if you still get fade then go to ally belled discs (which might also give you a good look you're after for not that much more cash compared to the drilled plus more benefit of weight saving and heat dissapation). In the unlikely event you still get fade then go 4 pots as the wider surface area reduces heat spots. I went through the pain barrier with brakes.

I looked round for a "better quality" plain disc but came to the conclusion that I could change them more often with the cheap ones and that will give you better brakes for more of the time anyway. Discs don't have to be worn out to start dropping off in thier abilty to stop you.

Drilled discs seem a bit "boy racer" to me. The possible, hyped-up benefits of better cooling? I don´t believe it really. I saw the light a few years back - I had bought some nice Wilwood calipers and (drilled) discs for my race car. As it happened, they were very quickly worn down, so I asked Wilwood what I had done wrong. The major problem was a bad choice of pad compound. But the engineer also told me (more or less), that they basically only made the drilled discs because some boy racer customers wanted them. Not for cooling, not for gas release or any of the hype we all see in the ads. They make them because they need food on the table, plain and simple. Suppose I can´t argue against the business case of manufacturing and selling the drilled discs when people insist on buying them. But since then I have used plain (possibly grooved if it can´t be helped) discs only - also for racing. No cracks... Personally I have a set of 290mm seperate belled discs on the way from Thorney, which seems like the right thing for me. I can do with the reduced unsprung weight and they might just give that little extra cooling I need. /Allan

Yes , got through 2 sets during 2006 / 2007 on track, and then switched to RS14 / RS14 , then back to RS14 rear , SBS front for better balance. I still have a spare hardly used set I got from questmead.

Righteo, I think im set on what I am going to buy after reading numerous posts on the forum and reviews elsewhere on the web. I was almost persuaded to buy the standard discs for circa £65 all round but I also want them to look good as well as working well (without cracking, rusting etc). So i'm 99% sure i'll go for some EBC Ultimax discs all-round for £247 and get some Carbone Lorraine RC5+ pads all-round for £191 delivered. These items coupled with the stainless steel braided hoses and dot 5.1 fluid being delivered from Courtenay's next week should hopefully impress me more than the standard components have! (getting my plenum with red pipework and front & rear engine mounts too - can't wait) Anyone had any experience of coupling the CL's with the Ultimax discs? chinky chinky

No offence but that's a fcuking mental decision to make. Whacking out an extra couple of hundred quid just for a product with a few holes drilled in it from a company with a terrible reputation outside of the chav tuning world is irrational!
