...
speed sensor is in the nearside rear hub , so not change to mileage or speedo

unfortunately any tyres sizes eg. 195/40/17 are just a rough guide and won't be in any way exact or comparable. For instance the Kumho KU31 205/50/16 which several people have fitted to a 16" rim has an actual width of 214mm so very wide.

I went for 205/45/16 and get no rubbing on TMS spec TDs.
They do look too small though, lowering the front to look good gives a rake of about 20mm and a very low front number plate

downsides there are ,
fuel tank reading slightly affected
headlights / driving lights aim lowered

The headlights were the real and very obvious problem so I raised the front back up again. The light pattern was hitting the road about 10 feet ahead but turn in was sharp.

Martin, do you have the settings used for your geo? I would be surprised if you had a bad setup considering who did it but wondering what setup you had.

I thought I read that you had a Guglielmi geo. I must have been thinking about a different thread. For the cost of 2 new tyres I would consider a geo instead. Before I changed wheels etc I had a fast road geo with standard wheels and it was a massive improvement. Given the (unhindered by Vauxhall) development that went into the Elise/Exige you can understand why people adopt the Elise/Exige geo setup and wheel/tyre sizes. The lower tyre cost alone is not enough to justify it when you need to spend at least 500 quid on wheels and maybe another 200/500/1200 quid on suspension. Although, if you track the car regularly or just want semi-slicks then you have no other choice. Do you know how old and how many miles had been done on the original 175 front tyres? The fronts can easily last too long and even when the tread depth is still plenty good enough the rubber can be cracked and hard - MOT failure when bad enough.

just add the comment about sidewalls , the original RE040 fronts have a large high sidewall, but it is very stiff. It gives the car its "dartyness" and quick change of direction , which imho is the whole point of a VX
