AFAIK balance shafts are there to counteract engine vibration, removing them will make the car shake a lot more. Not sure you will see any performance improvement (other than the weight loss)

Posted Image . I think the engine will rev more freely as well, not sure of the potential for damage.

You will get slightly more engine vibrations, certainly not much more. You might gain a bhp or 2 but not much but the engine will rev a lot easier. Well worth doing but only if you have the engine out for some other reason already.

its not possible to do it with the engine in the car you will get some extra virbation but not much.

I didn't notice any extra vibration at all. Supposed to release 10bhp according to the GM build book.

Nev, I think the drugs might be having a bigger effect on you than you realise. You yourself posted a link to the GM Ecotec build book a couple of days ago, in the Honda engine into a VX thread.

This to me is like "Vx towball. Good or bad?" Or "22" rims on a vx220...good idea?" I'd definitely want rid of the shafts.

Clam off won't cut it, engine has to come out completely to remove the balance shafts.

If I remember how David Visard put it... Assume the car weighs 1,000 kg and the weight of the moving engine (reciprocating and rotating) parts are 100kg. If the reduction ratio in first gear is 10:1 then the car has to move, 1,000kg divided by 10 (gear ratio reduction) = 100kg PLUS 100kg of moving engine parts Total 200 kg Reduce the mass of the parts moving in the engine by 15kg (for instance by removing the balancer shafts) and the car now only has to move 185kg. Therefore acceleration in first gear is improved. The same is true in second gear but obviously to a lesser extent. I am sure the smart guys out there will say this is not all of the story... The above example just takes into account rotating weight NOT rotating inertia. The difference being removing 15kg from a component with a diameter of 50 m/m removes less rotating inertia than removing 15kg from the outside diameter of a component with a much larger diameter such as a flywheel.

Vocky is widely reckonised as a tuning guru when it comes to the Z22SE and I am not. Consider the origins of the engine. It was built for the Vectra (repmobile which would spend many hours/days trolling the motorway network with minimum maintenance and drivers who would be much more concerned about vibration than performance). Do the balancer shafts improve engine longevity - I don't know but probably. Does removing them improve performance almost certainly(based on all the comments here). So it has to be your decision based on the opinions and facts you can extract from the forum and any other sources.

If it were me and money was no object I think I would, on balance, go for it.
