If the engine is coming out and you are doing a lightened flywheel then you want to remove the balance shafts. Simples. thumbsup OTOH I suspect that your plans for crank work are unnecessary. Read the build book.

the z22se crank is balanced extremely well by the factory, the balancer shafts are extremely unbalanced by design, they weigh 2Kg each and spin at twice the crank speed. So at 7000 rpm they are an unbalanced rotating mass spinning at 14000rpm  So with the balance delete fitted you remove the strain the shafts cause on the water pump chain, which has to be a good thing, and according to the guys at General Motors they consume 5 bhp EACH to turn on a standard engine.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but does anyone know where you can actually get hold of a balance shaft deletion kit for a turbo?? Courtenay have been out of stock for ages :(

Neil deleted my shafts no probs thumbsup you do notice a slight movment in engine (vibration) but nothing major and it does help engine spin up quicker and you get extra bhp so all good in my eyes :tt:

Personally I can't see how removal can hurt the engine per se. In fact going back to David Vizard, he used to clain that balancing ALL THE ENGINE components (pistons, conrods etc) only increase the engines SAFE REV LIMIT by 50 rpm - that is not a typo. I cannot see how balancer shaft removal can have any effect on the engines max safe rev limit. The only factor might be that some fixings that were already lose might fall out sooner than before. I don't have this mod yet. It sounds like it does not significantly increase the harshness of the car. This would be down to the body/chassis's "sympathetic harmonic frequency" being in a different range to the frequency of the vibrations of an engine that has had the balancer shafts removed. Paul

Why are we still discussing this? He is having a lightened flywheel and thinking about modifying the crankshaft! Balance shafts are no longer relevant!
