195/40R17 81W XL TL KUMHO SPORT KU31 At £50 pound a go it,s worth getting two new front tyresKumho KU31 in 195/40/17 xl seem to be popular on standard fronts (hard to fit though) they are what I will be replacing my Bridgestones with.
Cheaper than replacing the one knackered 175 tyre

Do you now if a 195/45/17 is less in height than a 195/40/17 ?Goodyear Eagle F1s 195/45x17 fit fine and are a good tyre for a reasonable price
If they both fit which is the best fit under the wheel arch ?

Hmmm define slightly...the Kumho's are approx 36mm smaller outside diamater so in theory the front of the car will drop 18mm compared with Bridgies. Wouldn't bother me too much, just have to be careful if you regularly go over speedbumps as ones which used to be fine might not be any more. The 45 profile is 'slightly' higher so will fill the arch 'slightly' more but you're only talking millimetres here so not very noticeable between them and they're both 'slightly' lower than the standard fit Bridgies...

My car ran the Goodyear 195/45x17 F1s (on standard ride height) and it never touched anything and there are loads of speedbumps around us

You are essentially putting a 8 inch wide tyre on a 5.5 inch wide wheel. Sounds like you are going too far to me....
Not at all, I was massively into offroading before getting my VX and had a massively modified Jeep Wrangler. Often in the offroad scene people run very wide tires on small rims and appart from them being a pig to mount they are actualy better once mounted and less likely to come away from the bead etc I had 13.5in wide tires on a 8in wide rim and quite a few friends had 15in wide tires on 8in rims.

Should really be getting 195 50 17's to match the circumference apparently.
Haha, yeah, in theory but you try finding some decent tyres (or any tyres for that matter) in that 'ideal' size

Did vauxhall or lotus (whoever chose the bridgestones) make a mistake then? I know (or think that i remember) that thinner wheels/tyres were introduced on the fronts to dial-in a healthy amount of understeer. Is it that understeer that you are trying to eliminate? Why was it that they made such a fundamental mistake then?
