If you want to take the power lap times seriously then it should be the same driver/stig. But then the conditions should also be the same/optimal. So, in reality, it only really matters that the driver(s) is fast. I'm not I care I who or how many people it is.

So, does it really matter that they are a gimmick? From my point of view they can't really get rid of the Stig now. It's good for sales of licensed xmas tat to keep the character (in white) and therefore the revenue stream that didn't exist 10 years ago. Top Gear is a massive deal nowadays. I have had something Top Gear-ey for the past few Christmaseseses and the Stig has featured in all of them, weather it be the remote control car, quiz book or mug.

Small rant time.
Oh yeah, loving some of the comments from the link. Do people really want to see a show about the type of car the average person could own? I thought "average" represented a very thin slice of the population. And I'm sure I wouldn't sit down every Sunday to watch somebody trying to excitedly talk about the new Civic diesel and how it has a better colour selection than the Golf

On this weeks show Hammond will drive this White Audi A3 convertible to the hairdressers then go pick up some fresh veg from MorrisonsWaitrose then sit in a queue of traffic with the aircon on then be home in time for tea. Meanwhile James will attempt to negotiate a cheap deal on 2 new tyres for the new Renault Megane at Kwikfit, and fail miserably.

Everyone knew who it was anyway even before some builder had seen the costume in his house and it was splashed all over the papers (think that was about 2 years ago).

Given this has happened between seasons, I reckon its all a media hype/fake, to try and gee up interest in the utter shite that is TG thesedays (although the last series, despite lasting 5 mins, was pretty good by their standards).

Now the truth is out (the worst kept secret in TV) I can let you know a few more morsels. 1. It was not always Ben Collins in the suit although he did the majority of the gigs. 2. Perry McCarthey was sued by the BBC for doing shop openings and personal appearances dressed as Stig 1 3.The white and black Stig images are now copywritten by the BBC and I have known of threats of legal proceedings against people wearing the all black and the all white style outfits when used for commercial purposes 4. There is someone who is quite well known to our .org community who has stood in for the Stig on at least three occasions.

Almost choking moment as I recall that endurance event that Top Gear did & someone well known to our org community 'helping out', then back to reality as the penny drops & I remember that another 'racing driver' posts on here B)

I don't see what the big deal is; anyone with an internet connection has known that Ben Collins has played 'The Stig' for years. 'The Stig' is a fictional character and knowing that a certain driver has driven as 'The Stig' is neither here nor there, we still don't know who 'The Stig' is.

Hi all, There is more than one stig, three actually. Ben is/was the most frequently used driver but there is another driver who does car lap times. He's young talented and above all else - very quick. Races in Britcar and does a lot of testing for oem and tyre companies. The third stig is the stand in for walking around the NEC and public appearance work. Look carefully at the stigs gloves, white alpine stars or sparco - thats how you know. Cheers Ian
