Are the gearboxes for the 220 na and the 220 tubby exactly the same. Thought I'd read on here somewhere that there was a difference. If they are different is it easy to change an na box to fit a tubby?

Final drive ratio is definitely different between turbo and NA. Not sure if there are other physical differences like starter motor position?

If starter motor is on different side, from which car can I source a box for a tubby? Dont suppose it would matter about the final drive ratio would it?

Final drive ratio determines how quick you accelerate and therefore how soon/frequently you have to change gear! It's all about the in gear acceleration! :D The NA is closer ratio than the tubby box so if you put a tubby box on an NA it would feel even slower!! ;)

Final drive ratio is important as it will affect top speed, acceleration & revs.
Higher final drive ratio = lower top speed with faster acceleration, but will be revving higher at same speed so if you do a lot of motorway miles it will not be as quiet or fuel friendly.
Not sure what the factory f23 final drive in a vxt is but if I was having a gearbox rebuild I'd do what I did on my last car & go with higher ratio as top speed & motorway cruising not that important to me.
I went from 3.8 to 4.2 & was pleased with results.

Cheers

generally if you get a diesel box then ratios will be much longer to suit the 2000 rpm range. In terms of different clusters then there is a nice Alfa JTS 5 speed setup that is very nice and close , especially 3rd 4th.

Oooh, I do love the consistency of these cars. Those ratios and ident codes came from the EPC. :beat:

Thanks for info guys although i did know final drive ratios would effect acceleration thumbsup What i need to know is which car with a f23 box has its starter on the same side as a tubby, which is why i asked for the pics, so that i could compare them with the pics on ebay. That list of all the various f23 types --does the starter motor position vary on all of them?

as a rough guess, the 2.0L are iron blocks and will fit, but engine mounts can vary , vectra front and astra top (need to check) otherwise you can swap in the insides and keep your housing

Ah, thats a good idea--swap the insides. I am assuming here that is no problem at all with doing that !! Is it easy to do ?

Hello again, just been looking at my box now it is back from 'repair'. There is a paper sticker with a number then the letters 'AF' Does this mean anything ? Looking at the posts above there seems to be different suffixes ---where are these situated? It says F23 in the metal work but nothing else and getrag.

That's the ident code of the gearbox and is the correct version for the turbo, according to the EPC. As pet my earlier post. thumbsup
