If it's turbo you are after then there's plenty of TDi engines out there if you want something different?!?!?

Did that PSR Automotive S3/2.0TFSi transplant into an Elise ever come off in the end? That must have taken well over a year to do and God only knows at what cost.

Twincharge? Sounds interesting! I need something with a lot of power but with reliability,

converting to a stage 2 sc is still going to be the cheapest way to get more power, the engine should still be ok at 80k, it will need a pair of chains, possibly a water pump and a set of steel rods.

Also worth cleaning the piston rings whilst you are fitting the rods.

I'd say fuel pump too with that mileage thumbsup

Given my engine lunched itself due to oil pump seizure....

Cant you part exchange your current engine for a new one from Vauxhall for about £1500? Then SC it, all done for maybe £5-6K

Or get a low mileage unit from a write off, that way you can ask Lee/Joe to build the SC engine while your still driving the VX
then drop the car off when the time comes to swap.
I think your budget rules out anything unique and even more so if your after high power and reliability.
You need to go down a route where the mistakes/expense have been made/met by others.
And it's not like an SC VX is an everyday sight.
Plus you have a higher power option if you have more £ to spend at a later date.

The only option that is sure to fit your budget is supercharging your engine. However, don't expect to go over 250hp without spending silly money later. The 2.0 TFSi is finally running in an Elise. Those are readily good for 400+hp without doing any internals. However, you won't get one installed for that kind of money even with a lot of free labor. You would be very lucky to get a 200hp 1.8T installed for £3-4K, but at least it would modify up to 350hp readily. Don't even try to get a DSG running in a transplant, you would need to spend a lot of money on custom electronics to get it working. Edit: Don't worry too much about the age of the engine. Yes, it will need some service items at the time of the upgrade, but it should generally be solid. I took an engine that was built in the 80's with 180K miles on it and upgraded it from 160 to 280hp. It was fine.

How about VW TSI 170HP? 1400 cc. A really light engine. It should be possible to get some more hp out of them and still get an even lighter VX?

How about a mazda wankel engine. Go for the turbo one and you'll have lots of go and lost of revs. Dead easy to pugrade too, just bolt on another rotary section and fit a new eccentric shaft. Its a nice small unit too. Alternatively how about a ford BDT (I think its the T). 1400 turbocharged motor. Revs like theres no tomorrow. Might be hard to source though.

Yes it's all done now. Not sure on the final power but believe it was putting out around 320bhp on an initial power run without any type of remapping. What I couldn't understand is that if your going to spend that sort of money why would you refuse to install a chargecooler. :beat:

thumbsup. Yeah, seems like missed opportunity at minimal extra cost, given what it's presumably already cost.

None of those engine swap options are viable on a tight budget, unless you can i) source the donor engine for next to nothing, ii) do all the fitting and fabrication work yourself and iii) sort out an ECU to run it without spending a small fortune. Even sticking a Duratec in an Elise is far from cheap and still delivers less power than a bolt-on SC conversion on an existing engine.

80k is nothing on a mass produced repmobile engine.
