If you want to test resistance in the engine, take the spark plugs out, take it out of gear, as you have the wheel arch out on the crank side you should be able to reach in and turn the engine by hand. That will tell you for sure. I work in Canary Wharf but am more than happy to pop over and give you a hand after work. Don't have much experience with turbo cars, but can try and help thumbsup

Hi,

Sorry I haven’t been on for while – I spend another few hours in/under the engine bay but couldn’t find a loose boost pipe. I also tried turning the engine by hand while I had the right rear winner wheel arch off and spark plugs out but couldn’t L

Just put it in to Vauxhall to repair and told them it could possibly be a loose boost pipe. Also two new bridgestones, service, MOT, outer handbrake cable (fix a squeak when it rubs on the wishbone) then it’s hopefully a perfect 2004 again J

Just have to take this one on the chin – I hate failing to fix things but I had to get it done in time for MOT.

Any last bets – they’ll be ringing my very soon?

I reckon a something major like a bearing or silly part like a pressure gauge.

Thanks again for you help – I’ll post when I get news.

Regards, Richard

Doesnt sound great that you couldnt turn it by hand. Fingers crossed its something simple.

Hope it gets sorted okay. for future, because you don't know your way around the car, i'd reccomend becoming an RAC or AA member etc. with the full option inc homestart. this way at least you will get a basic diagnosis done such as working out whether it is a hose, head gasket, bottom end, etc etc. They can do all of this at the roadside. if its simple they obviously fix it. if its major they can take it to a 'proper' garage (YCRA not VXL) to fix.

I hope you get it sorted, and hopefully won't cost much. @ vx220chick: My experience with the AA is that they plug in there diagnostic tools and if it reads a code they wright it down. If they can't fix it, they'll ask you where do you want it taken to. Personally there not much help, but good if you need it taken anywhere thumbsup

yeah - i know they don't do a great deal, but for the OP they will know a lot more than he did and could have got to the bottom of it sooner - esp if it was just a hose come loose LOL
I still use the RAC even though i usually know the problem myself, as you said too, they are good for transport. (don't get me started on the 'you'll need a low low loader mate' and they send a van, scenario FFS!)

The AA have always sent out a low loader for mine :D even when I told them it wasn't going anywhere!

RAC thumbsdown
AA thumbsup
:gayfight:

I was very grateful when they took it all the way to Northwich from Stafford to get it fixed. Would of cost me a fortune to get it there.

Hi,

They rang me.

I was covered by NatWest’s gold account; it covered me for both pick-up from breakdown point to and home to repair garage (within any time frame) within a 10 mile radius for free. Got to say I was pleased with the service, couldn’t have asked for more –they sent a low loader and a really really mad driver, he was a complete mad coke head, he talked about coke the whole 12 miles of the journey with the odd bits and pieces thrown in about Ferrari’s he’d picked up! I gave him an extra £20 backhander for the extra 2 mile and he was chuffed to bits with it.

They rang me after a short diagnostics test (£55) – they said the test had shown up that all four valves may be kapoot but it was probably unlikely and that further work would be required to find the exact fault (what a surprise) and it would cost a further 200quid to investigate for upto 2 hours work. Anyway they rang me back a couple of hours later – wait for it… Main engine fuse (whatever the hell that is!!!), and another fuse had blown at the same time. I was happy… for about 20 seconds…

She then proceeded to say the rear disks definitely need changing because of corrosion (£540 with pads), my fronts are close to going (£400 with pads) and that the VX is SPECIAL and the break fluid needs changing (£200). I could smell bull****.I laughed and said only change them if it fails it’s MOT which it’s also booked in for along with a service. She also gave me a quote for two rear Bridgestones of £180 each. I told her I could get the tyres for £120 each elsewhere.

Out conversation ended with her checking with the MOT department if break disks would fail the MOT and see if she can match the Bridgestones of £120.

I’ve just had a look on the net and you can get 4 quality disks for £120. I’m going to tell them when they ring tomorrow that I feel you’re ripping me off and just do the service.

The garage is Staples Corner Service department, London.

Does anyone know any good sources for break disks and ceramic pads (as that’s what’s on)?

Cheers, Richard

You can get four quality discs and Mintex 1144/1155 pads all around for £170 from Camskill. Get the car out of there straight away and don't let them do any more damage.
