Has anyone had his ABS system removed? Is it really that nessesary? we could save a lot of weight by removing it plus better brake responce. I know that its a heavy job to do it...

i dont know. i ve never done anything like that... Is it impossible? i ve read in an other opel forum (cant recall were) that someone did it in an astra, it was doable (dont ask me how) but really Posted Image. the weight savings were more than 30kg, i think.

No way! Add a dot 'cause 3.0kg are more likely to gain. The ECU and the hydraulics are the only weight you may gain, it's only a very small part of electromechanic. You will never recognize the loss of weight in matter of performance.
The ABS delivers the speedo signal, so by removing the ECU you will need to generate a new speedo signal. You have a degree in electronics? Then go on, develop some electronics, build it up, drop it in, see if it works.

Sorry, a kill switch for trackday use or swap in the Elise ECU (which is the best option imho, this little thing gives you ABS performance you will not miss).

Trouble with a kill switch is the ABS system DRP defaults to max safety mode eliminating virtually all rear braking.

Plus you need ABS for MOT unless you have a friendly mechanic doing it. AS said above best to just fit a kill switch

Thats not quite true, if you have ABS on the car then it will be tested via the light going out on the dash within a certain amount of time after starting the car.
If you take the ABS of the car then there is nothing to test in the same way as changing to a non airbag steering wheel, although MOT reg,s are going to get very strict soon as to what you can or carnt change (on modern cars atleast) thanks to the interfering euros =]

I think this is the page which i saw. He says that was about 25lb (not kilosPosted Image), the difference was noticeable and "is clearly a worthwhile conversion" but there is a problem "The only thing that is problem with the installation right now is that the hoses at the wheels don't have anchor fittings in place to attach them to the struts. I was able to rig them with zip-ties and some anti-chaffe tape, but I suspect that some wear will occur and I'll have to keep checking on the lines if I don't want to rocket off the edge of a curve at a most unexpected moment!". who knows...

Maybe it saved 25lbs (and I doubt that) on an Astra but as cs_ said earlier, it weighs next to nothing on the VX.

There should be a rubber lined P clip on each wishbone to hold the brake line. I replaced mine when I refreshed the suspension and think I used 8mm clips.

Well there you go, an Isuzu Impulse Coupe (whatever on earth that is) has a considerably heavier ABS system than we do.

The ABS pump will weight in the region of 2Kg, plus a few lines less, and a few ml of fluid less... Might get near 3Kg saved. JJJ had a thread a while back asking about removal, I stuck a load of info in there about getting a speed signal to the dash from an ABS sensor etc. I cant be fcuked to search to find it because its of no use to me :P

If you remove your ABS try insuring you car with it as a declared mod, I wish you the very best of luck but AFAIK there is not a single company that will cover you.

thanks techieboy for the responcesPosted Image

But i cant help wonder (please dont Posted Image me) why this feature was left out of the legendary mclaren. Since its so light in the speedster, mclaren wouldnt have a problem with all those advanced materials that uses...

"Servo-assisted ABS brakes were ruled out as they would imply increased mass, complexity and reduced brake feel; however at the cost of increasing the required skill of the driver."

Its the removal of ABS from a car with ABS originally equipped that they baulk at. I tried as many brokers and direct companies as I could find numbers for and they all said no can do. CCI said they would cover for track but not road cover.

What it probably meant was they didnt want to spend the money/time with Botch Motorsport division to get the ABS working right.
Thats what you get for a cheap car ;) Spend a Million on it and you get yourself a well setup wagon ;)
