I have been liaising with Liam at MMG for the past few months about the new Intercooler (suitable for standard map, up to stage 3 / 270 bhp) he has developed. And he has been good enough to let me try it it. Here are my first impressions :

I have been trying it over the last few days. And I have to say that I am impressed. The main reason that I wanted to get it was to get the intake temperatures down as the standard intercooler is basically sh**.

My experience of driving the car was that it immediately felt different. I wasn’t expecting it, but it felt as though I had a bit more power, and that surprised me a bit. After tazzing about in it on Saturday and also going for the blat on the Peaks Meet on Sunday I felt as though I got a better feel for it. And as I said, it felt like it had a bit more power, and it felt as though the car was more responsive.

From the data I have seen, this intercooler has given a drop in intake temps of 15 – 20 degrees on average. I think that accounts for the slight gain in power, as I gather as a rule of thumb for every 12 degrees drop there is 3% increase in power. And as the intercooler is much more efficient the temperature recovery is much quicker than the standard intercooler, which is why it probably feels more responsive.

Also, it is very simple to fit. You don’t need any additional fixings. It is practically a drop in replacement. The bottom hose needs approximately 1 inch cutting off. And you use the same clips that are used for the standard intercooler Link to my review

Consequently I now want one  So I have spoken to Liam about this and there is a two tier group buy price, i.e. there is a price for 5, and a cheaper price for 10. There are two options on the intercooler. One is a recore (exchange) and the other is a fully fabricated unit (which is lighter). The recore standard price is £499 inclusive of VAT (plus postage) and the fully fabricated unit is £625 inclusive of VAT (plus postage).

So group buy price break down is as follows : for 5 units of the recore it is £459. For 10 units it is £419. For 5 units of the fully fabricated intercooler it is £565. And for 10 units it is £525. All prices are inclusive of VAT, but exclude postage.

Finally, if there is a mix of 10 units, i.e. 5 recore and 5 fully fabricated, they will be at the 10 off price.

A graph showing the results of the standard intercooler and the new MMG intercooler. Note the airflow temp on the standard intercooler is 6 degrees less than on the MMG intercooler :

Having carried a couple of "easy" mods that have turned out to be a right PITA, is this genuinely straightforward even with clam in place? - done via bootlid or rear arch? Potentially interested in the lightweight core.

AFAIK it's accessable by removing the wheel arch liner.

Cheers.

It is an easy swap. Wheel arch liner and ear out. Use the jubilee clips that are in there for the standard cooler thumbsup

Well if you get your name on the list, it's up to 6. So just 4 more needed ;)

Not sure of the cut off date. Will need to speak to Liam.

My name would be on that list Bob, no question. Unfortunately I've just paid for a service and insurance. That's made things very tricky

Let me get this straight, so the intercooler plus getting it mapped and you would see around 270bhp if you already have an exhaust system or is there bit more to it than that?

Also could this intercooler be used past 270bhp if went to stage 4 with uprated turbo etc?

This intercooler is suitable up to stage 3 / 270 bhp. You will still need to ensure you have everything else for stage 3 i.e. exhaust, pre cat removal etc, as well as the remap. And no, this intercooler is not suitable for stage 4. For stage 4, then you will need the larger MMG intercooler.
