Bored at work ;)

So been lookin ay various exige/Elise websites lately at bodywork mods to improve cornering/downforce/aerodynamics and have seen a few websites that sell canards and side skirts like this below:

Now as said in a previous thread I have no idea about aero etc so was wondering if the people that do can answer a few questions for me.

What is the benefit of the side skirts?
What is the optimum angle/size for the canards?

Many thanks and await being slated :D

Side skirts extend the flat area of the floor. Especially on an elise / exige with their very curved in sill sections. On the VX squaring off the sill section to prevent bleed from sides under the car. Might want a small, flat side piece. Generally the bigger canards are the more downforce but also the more drag you have. How about a front diffuser? Thats what my mk2 splitter will incorperate.

I did some reading on canards when I picked a pair up on eBay and as far as I could tell, the angle of attack needed to be at least 15° and upto as much 45°. They're not meant to add front downforce (so it's not like getting the correct angle on the rear wing) but rather, they're meant to stall and separate the air into two streams of air along the side of the car, one of which is meant to go up and over the rear of the car and one along the lower side of the car. That, of course, could be total bollox and me totally misunderstanding the reams of stuff I tried to read. Maybe hope Winstar or somebody else with a grasp of aerodynamics comes along soon. :D

I think they are to add down force in this application, on F1 cars they are oftern used to divert airflow from the front wing.

From the data I've seen on the VX it's not short on front downforce compared to rear would be better spending your time trying to reduce the drag from the blunt front end. Plus due to the shape of the vx I doubt you'd get them big enough and still be able to get it through a MOT
