I'll cut the rant and just explain what I've seen. Random stuttering of engine when under load/accelerating harshly/going uphill. Removed dbilas and noticed small arc-shaped metal pieces inside, almost looking as if they were the right size to fit around a piston. And now - removed oil cap while engine was running and there is basically a pulse of air coming up through the cap every time the engine ticks over on one of the strokes. I, (with my excellent diagnosis skills ) have determined this to be piston ring related, given the previous signs. However - I've only driven it 1k in the last year so can't comment on oil usage, fuel usage I'm getting maybe 160ish to a tank.

OH :( not good, worth a head strip to check? It's either dead or something else, what I don't know. have you rebored, just thinking ahead.. if you do it now you might stop further damage.

Strangely the stuttering, since changing the inlet and injector plug, has stopped, it still has the puffing of air though. I'm debating putting it up on stands soon to have a gander.

Assuming all breathers are clear my little experiance would also suggest compression ring Possibly seized then broken up on startup Hope I'm wrong Good luck

Can you get hold of a compression tester ?

Considering that there are lots of moving parts on the oil side of the engine I wouldn't think puffing of air would do it. any blue smoke?

Leak down test

How hard/long does that take?

In others words - will I have the effort required to go out and do it?

You need a compressor and pressure gauge, takes a moderate while to do as you need to get both cams shut per piston and then wait the leak time etc.

My rings went about a year ago (all fixed now) I had small clouds of blue smoke on hard acceleration at approx 5k. If you were stationary and revved to 5k and above there was a constant cloud of blue/white smoke

Takes a few mins and you can muster up the effort for this

Wait. Were the bits on intake side of the engine? If so, they are unlikey to originate from within the engine....

That's what I thought, but it seems odd they were piston ring shaped.

Thinking about it. Probably even less likely to get past the valves... Is the throttle body all present and correct?

Is this normal let off from inside the engine?

if you loosen the oil cap it should just sit there in the cam cover, there should also be a small resistance to lift it up, usually it can be pulled back down by the engine

When I got my intake mani for my SC con from the US. I found bits of metal in it that had found there way out from the engine when the car it came off engine blew. Seb had you got the breather connected to the intake in that Vid?

When the engine isn't ticking over I can remove the cap no problem, sometimes gets a bit stuck but I thought that was just due to the fact I hardly ever open it up.

Am checking the oil levels tomorrow I think to see exactly what it's drunk in 1k miles.

Breather on the cam cover is just venting to a little filter sat inside the engine bay.

I should have said

if you loosen the oil cap with the engine running it should just sit there in the cam cover, there should also be a small resistance to lift it up, usually it can be pulled back down by the engine breather system
