It's one of the most important safety features of the car.which will have undergone heavy testing by GM I wouldn't wanna risk an aftermarket part here. Also, if you do fit an aftermarket one and decide to sell at some point in the future, make sure you tell the new owners.

lets say you hit a lampost straight on, you either let the genuine crashbox take the impact or use a cheap copy and let your body absorb the impact

choice is yours

I would like to know who would be liable in the event of a nasty crash, I guess it would be the supplier of the cheap copies

I suspect it would be the person who commissioned its fitment.

Yeah right! I went searching for the test data when I considered making them. The only info from the testing is that there is no chassis damage (and occupants are OK) with a straight frontal impact from 30 mph with the impact energy being absorbed by the bodywork and crash structure. There is no further information.

OE ones are in acrylic resin and feature a range of reinforcements. I have no idea what the aftermarket ones are made from.

Aftermarket ones are made of grp with internal reinforcement of cor mat.
The posibilities are:

1.-buy a second hand crashbox (usually with little damage, or already "slightly" crashed...wonder if these are perfect in an impact (hope not)
2.-buy aftermarket one. Dooubt about strenghtness and fitment issues.
3.-buy new ($$$, exactly you know how much?)

Thanks
