Well, I couldn't remove the bracket either, but I did manage to get my arms behind it and get the blue loom plug apart. It looked clean and dry inside, so I just sprayed it with cleaner, waited for it to dry and put it back together again. It is (and was) securely fastened to the side of the bracket, so I'm not convinced I've achieved anything. :( I guess I'll just have to drive it and find out.

Your symptoms sound just like mine. Still haven't fixed it. Have an OBD reader coming and then I'll look through the fault codes and get it sorted. Might be loom of doom but I don't know.
