Well as it was my car at one point I guess I could add some comment. Worst conversion? I wouldn't completely agree but I can see where you're coming from. It needed yet more work from an engineering aspect and was bodged in some areas. Having said that the fact it worked at all, didn't have any chassis cutting going on like the woodsport one and at one point was scaring GT3's around Brands Hatch was what turned my head. All that pig iron weight was up against the bulkhead by the way, much more forward than the k-series or any Honda/Audi conversion. It was a significant weight though... If you had it in mind that it turned the lightweight elise into a sort of TVR Griffith-type elise then that's about right. In the driving experience at least. When it worked and you had the opportunity to floor it the sound was delicious and it'd rip up the road at a helluva rate. The problem for me was that it didn't have the reliability of a Griffith (and that's saying something) and quickly turned into a money pit. In my younger days I'd have had the patience, though maybe not the funds, to get it working reliably. Now though I'm old and just want stuff to work. At least for half the time!! Had so many plans for that car but reality is a pisser sometimes eh?

Last time I saw it is when it was parked at TDi (July 2010) and it did not look particularly 'finished'

can't remember the exact quote, but runs like a dog was what my memory is telling me....

ignoring that, VR6 was never a great engine, a triumph of marketing over engineering, they never made big power, and weighed in at almost 200Kg's, hence why VAG never persisted with it.

did it ever make it onto the dyno at TDi? be interesting to see what it actually made?

Sorry, late catch-up, been on hols...

Yeah, it was at TDI then as you say quite accurately, because it was running like a dog. The fuel pump was knackered which I didn't know at the time. I'd been incorrectly told beforehand it wasn't the fuel pump and so it was at TDI for investigation as to why I couldn't use more than about 2-3mm of throttle. Now imagine how painful the drive was upto Lakeside, I remember it only too well :(

I was told it was close to 300bhp but didn't have it dyno'ed myself - I did have a dyno printout that the builder had a couple of months before I bought it and it showed around 280-285bhp I think, that was with a very unrestricted exhaust though. Having experienced a variety of elises/exiges (audi and honda included) and given the weight I'd say my arse-dyno reckoned on about 220-230bhp. Maybe it was more, I only got to experience it a few short times.

Didn't Audi have that same engine in alloy block form? When I say same, I mean similar... sure I'd seen that.

JSD had grand plans involving superchargers and whatnot for stupid power.... pipe dreams !!!

No Probs...

not aware of any ali blocked VR6 engines, one of the issues with it is that because the block is so under-cut (by the location of the bores in very close proximity) it has to be made from a pretty strong material to maintain any rigidity, (pearlitic grey cast iron with microalloyed steel).

in truth, the VR6 was a triumph of marketing over engineering, being able to sell a V6 in smaller FWD cars without having to re-design the front end, it never really made the power/torque of an equivalent V6 and with it's un-equal ports, it was always going to be somewhat of a compromise.

consideruing how good an engine the current 2.0TFSi 4 pot is, it really is all a bit pointless for them
