Just done a few searches on brakes in general as im replacing the discs & pads on the VX all-round. Pads are worn out and discs have a little life in them, but id prefer to refresh all at once.

The various searches turned into about an hour of reading - there seems to be a varied amount of positives and negatives with each set-up & as one person pointed out, brakes are usually a personal thing and obviously secondary items like tyre type often get overlooked.

I've had my eye on these discs for a while, does anyone have any first hand experience using these;

http://www.seriouslylotus.com/braking/brake-discs/alcon-308mm-disc-with-nitron-fixed-bells

And is anyone aware of any ABS issues with the slightly enlarged front disc with OEM rear disc set-up?

Cheers,

Josh..

No abs issues afaik, but i have abs turned off anyway. Edit: they aint worth £700 either.. Just get some normal 308's and great pads and you will see an increase in performance.

As above, standard disks are great if you have good pads. Depends if you track it to some extent

Even if you track, there is nothing wrong with just the usual 308's.

I just ordered a set of 4 Brembo discs for........ £74 delivered.  Is it really worth the extra for ally bells?

If I was racing and wanted every last tenth of a second then I get it but for road and track days? As I've never tried them, I'm genuinely interested...

Without wishing to hijack this thread..I'm looking to upgrade my brakes and was wondering what the options are to change discs and calipers etc (6pot?).and whether its worth it. Brakes always feel poor on track days..

I use on the front:

AP5000

308mm alcon discs (£455.-)

On the rear:

Ap2 from the front to the rear with a bracket

288mm alcon discs (£435.-)

Pads: CL6 al around

I'm very happy with this upgrade on the track and I'm running only on the track!

Well did you have any issues if and when you did have the ABS turned on?

Any suggestions on some 308's? And where from?

Id be interested to know my 308mm options and the weight of each.

Go 280 with aluminium bell.. For more reasonable money too.

Looks good, a set comes in at just under £600 & they look a worthy upgrade for less heat transfer, lighter weight and keeping the pads surface clean. Certainly something im considering - but id like to know who makes the discs themselves and the rating on the studs/ bolts.

They weigh loads less and last forever and look cool as as fook

I knew someone would mention the looks! Im after the weight saving, WITH better stopping power, WITH lower disc temps & WITH a brand name I can trust.

Interesting set-up. I've looked at switching the front calipers to the rear but that would also mean getting some replacement front calipers and then we're talking even more $$. Are them Alcon disc prices for fixed discs or just the replacement discs to go with ally bells?

Currently the pricing looks like this (full set of front and rear discs);

£599.94 - Eliseparts ally bells and grooved discs. 288mm allround.

£1064 - Nitron ally bells with Alcon discs. 288mm allround.

£1285 - Nitron ally bells with AP discs front and Alcon discs rear. 295mm front & 288mm rear.

£1404 - Nitron ally bells with Alcon discs. 308mm front & 288mm rear.

They're all pricey when you compare to offers like Camskills - set of 4 OEM size discs and Mintex pads for under £200 delivered, especially considering its for a part that wears and will need to be replaced. However, I tend to try and go for the best usually & with brakes I dont like to skimp, that said - OEM discs and their sizes seem to get fantastic reviews from people on here and obviously the money can then go to other parts for the car! But I wonder if those who use cheap discs are getting excellent performance because they're using ultra aggressive compounds that eat discs and compromise cold weather and everyday braking..

Im going to look into the weights of the above set-ups and alternative 308mm discs before committing as I still need to budget for pads, fluid and possibly braided lines. All I know is I want the brakes doing pretty soon, so the car can be enjoyed over the christmas break as long as the roads dont get an overdose of salt!

I upgraded last year to the ali bells for the front only (std rear disc)

Pagid RS42 front

Pagid 14 rear

Photo old Vs new

Also run with brake pipe cooling, mostly used on track and has been fine

I run ABS off as you get a much better feel to the bite

First ever discs I fitted were cheap £30 a pair from ebay... for a normal car would be fine but now with 300+ bhp needed more to stop it time after time and not just 2 laps

Josh the price is for the complete disc.

I've some friends (and me to in the past) which was running also with 4 AP2 al arround with 308mm in the front and 288mm on the rear.

Of course with different pads pagid black on the front and pagid blue on the rear.
