Hi everyone just bought my first vx220 it's a 2.2. I have owned it 4 days and loved every second of it. Only issue I think it could do with a little bit more power. Just wondering what the best mods for a 2.2 is not thinking about anything to major just basic stuff like induction kit, decat...

I was wondering would a small engine like this benefit from 2 induction kits (one ran to either side pod)? Also the car currently has a vse exhaust system would a decat make this overly loud. And what other mods are there available at a budget?

Read this one.

And this will probably answer your next question.

To get anything worthwhile requires spending reasonable sums of money. Either supercharging, engine transplant or Independent throttle body conversion (with associated breathing mods). I think the same applies to lots of other NA cars, but people buy into the bullshit normally and those 'naysayers' are shot down by those with a vested interest.

Speaking as someone who has literally been there and done that, an air intake and chav exhaust made it sound miles better and go a little bit quicker (at least in my head). Then i sent for The Batman and SC'd it. Now it goes like a nutter sounds like a jet taking off. i really wouldn't bother doing cams and 2.4 intakes etc. happy modding.

Advice I was given before I bought mine was save the money you would spend on trying to tune the engine and save up for a supercharger conversion... reading this thread and the others on this subject, it looks like very sound advice.

Maybe look at uprated suspension/brakepads if you want to improve the handling even further but tbh, the car is set up fantastically as standard...

Save up and supercharge!

I went from standard exhaust to a Larini and it made a huge difference, I guess my standard exhaust must have been quite restrictive. Not sure what power gains, but response is now a lot nicer and it's now closer to keeping up with mates cars!

No it did not. Only between your ears.

But sound emotion is also important when it comes to sports cars.

tbh 4 days in and "its too slow" implies you should have purchased the turbo and then gone on with "stage" chooning.

stage tuning = wallet emptying methodology ideally you should do stage once, which is part of the original buying VX experience

Reality is that the boggo SC conversion is too powerful for most people anyway - on the road at least.. Turns it into a line it up straight line weapon for most I'd bet ;) Spend cash on some Lotus dampers, fresh bushes, good working brakes with good pads, fresh tyres, and a good suspension set-up then once you're tired of that, come back for more powers..

NA with a few tweaks give the engine "a more sporty presence" (in Engrish / Japanese translation speak) does a very good impression of a sports car fast enough for the road, and a huge amount of fun without resorting to hairdriers..

Do some driver training in it at a track day

Best money you will ever spend on it

I swapped a session at a track day with ArticMonkey, he drove my high-tuned tubby and I drove his std NA.

He runs good pads and uprated shocks and a great Geo... I loved every minute of the NA, full on balls out each corner.

If owners have driven both, they are both great to drive BUT worlds apart on feel.

Look at car limits days (http://www.carlimits.com/) or book training at a track as per already said above.

You will find that you won't need more power to go round corners quicker  rallly

Hi cheers for the advice. I do not really need lessons on how to drive done plenty of track days in my old supras (owned 7 in total all heavily modified). This is probably why the vx220 feels underpowered to me. Sounds like it may be best to buy a turbo and then modify that, I will look into buying one next year. It would still be nice to have a bit of extra power mean time.

Then save up and supercharge. All the cool kids know that Turbos are not the most popular track variant.
