How the hell are they road legal?

So far the main requirement for getting 'E' road approval is that the tyre tread surface needs to have at least a certain %-age tread 'void' (next to a number of other rules). AFAIK it's somewhere in the 17-20% range.

Often they are put through the approval process for initial use on tarmac rally stages in classes that require cars to be road legal and have a valid MOT.

Not all manufacturers do this for all their motorsport tyres, so there are a number of 'wet' track tyres out there that would fulfill the tread regulations easily, but have simply not been put up for approval.

DOT rules in the USA allow for even less 'void' on the tyre tread so there you can get tyres that are almost slicks with just 2 small grooves all around the tyre and still be road-legal.

I like the look of those. Had a quick look at the website and the closest size for a 16" front is 195/55x16 which is close enough.

The 225/45x17 is available too. Looks like a good option for a track tyre.

I swapped t1r's for rsr's. Very happy. Kept the t1r's if anyone wants to try some for cheap. Fine on the road but tend to overheat on track.
