I must admit I wasn't fully aware of what servicing a Panerai entailed

At one point I had a verbal quote at over £1.1k for what started off at £480. Apparently they 'have' to replace the hands, but don't include the cost. That and a new bezel gear ended up with the bill at £635

Live and learn I guess. Like Anz it wont be going back for many a year!!

I assume that's for an in house 'P' movement rather than an uprated generic Unitas or ETA movement?

Is the hammer an estwing or a hulfators or snap on,or is it one of those really cheap ones that break, goes out of balance really quickly or is worth the square root of fcuk all once you have used it?

I've been considering watches for a few months now, never really been one for them until I tried one on and they do feel absolutely lovely! Which one though or both?

EDIT: They have come out a little bigger than planned, hopefully Nev won't spot them! :D

Swiss watches will be heavy on servicing if it's a stock "Swiss" movement. Most use ETA movements made by swatch group. These guys have stopped supplying spares to anyone other than approved manufacturers. The service cost therefore covers the cost of a full new movement. A stock eta will set you back about 200 quid so then you have fitting on top. The Swiss mfers that make their own movements are all expensive anyway. There is a big argument going on with swatch group and watch makers to get spares back available. I'd reckon China will produce copies before it gets sorted. If they get the quality sorted it'll all go Chinese. The Chinese don't have the quality yet as parts aren't interchangeable between the same design of movement. Seagull movements are getting close but their prices are higher than the Swiss makers!

Gotta love a crystal back. It's the only reason I got mine; I love to see the engineering that's gone into it. The precision is epic, even a thou out is way too much.
