To be fair to Nev there is a link in psychology and possessions.  Some have a need to 'buy' admiration from others or to 'prove status' to others by possessions.  I probably bought my submariner on this premise.  I had an income from a business sale, and probably needed to demonstrate the success.  As I have gotten older (and hopefully a little wiser) I'm actually rather indifferent to this watch as it is a bit shiny!  Consequently I don't care that much for it and I wear it daily as a meh watch.  Yeah, maybe a little frivolous.  I bought the VC later as I like the engineering inside it (mentally tiny and precise).  I rarely wear it, it has a brown leather strap and unless you're examining it carefully you wouldn't know what it was.  I bought this for myself and not to please others.  Luckily I grew out of the 'flash' after I got the submariner and sit on my cash instead of spending it.  I'm not accusing other submariner owners of being 'flash' I'm more reflecting on my own motivations.

My VC is in for service, I'll bung up a pic when I get it back.

I don't think you need 'to be fair to Nev' on this, he's talking shit as eloquently explained by oblomov. Re the Sub - I wouldn't consider that spending, more of an investment, well, better than sitting on cash in the bank anyway.

It must be the 1000s of psychologists that have it all wrong then as well as me, and you of course are right.

Don't try whipping me for suggesting you take an introspective look at yourself. :P

Because psychologists have no theories to offer about middle aged men in shitty little sports cars with lots of appendages tacked on, either..... Glasshouses and stones.

You should know after 8 years, I do so for personal experimentation/satisfaction, nothing to do with being ostentatious like wearing a needlessly expensive watch. I can't even be bothered to wash the car and care little for what it looks like. I don't polish it, glue useless carbon bits onto it or prevaricate over which latest wheels would look fashionable. Instead I mechanically changed it (to see if I could manage it mainly) with the aim to regularly drive it for my own personal fun/excitement - nothing to do with "looking swish", showing it off, being bling etc.

I don't know, wtf am I going to spend my money on without looking ostentatious or having deep seated psychological problems. Nev it would be good to see your car on the track to be able to see the fruits of your labour's.

Anyone else own a Bell&Ross?

Anyone else heard of Bell&Ross?

Yep,

I actually looked into them quite a bit a few years back.

I quite like them, and may get one in the future. I wouldn't buy new as they depreciate like a lead balloon. Also avoid any of the black finish unless it carbon as they scratch like nothing else.

Go for the bigger models as they wear small, Although tbh there are better value for ££ out there

Amazing how device a timepiece can be. I dont think anything has been posted that's more than the cost of a family holiday to Disney land. Are people that spend money on family holidays in need of psychological evaluation? I think in society these days there is a clamor to chase the lifestyle of the David Beckhams and Kanye west's particularly amongst better paid working class people. Hovering around the periphery posting photos of over finch range rovers on your Facebook etc. Can't see much fulfilment in that myself. I think for watchists a lot of it is appreciation of the quality of a decent watch and outside of cars fellas don't tend to buy a lot of nice personal stuff so a watch is a bit of something to make you feel a bit smarter and complement a smart outfit in a similar way to a lady might buy a nice pair of shoes or what have you. Or just a nice bit if engineering you can look at.

Just because I'm curious and I don't mean it as a poke at you Nev, you kindly gave me a passenger ride in your car at a Midlands meet but what do your psychologists say about people with a need to justify how their car is better/faster etc than the more expensive 'accepted' cars? I'm under no illusion that the VX is a plastic car built by turnip farmers etc but a lot of your posts come across as a need to prove yours is better than theirs. As mentioned, you have an interest in the engineering and your improvements I follow with interest but sometimes it comes across as you justifying it against the standard doctor/dentist choice when I don't think it needs it.
