As I'm fairly new to all things VX220, just looking for some advice here, looks like I'll have to replace TRE's, (see previous long winded post on that), ball joints, ARB drop links, possibly bushes. Anything else I should be looking at changing, the shocks/springs all appear to be in good shape, I've read a lot about hub bolts, wheel bearings but they appear fine, should I be changing them as a matter of course ??? Appreciate any guidance on this, thanks.

Bushes

Balljoints

Hubs

Nuts bolts

Hub carriers

track rod ends

drop links

That should do it.

Not sure about hubs etc.

We can do a full suspension refresh if your interested. All bushes, ball joints, drop links, removed and re-installed, wishbones powdercoated (or what ever coating you want) dont know the price off hand and jon is with a customer atm but its about £650 drive in drive out.. we can also do it by post, if youbsend us your complete wishbones you get fully completed set sent back. if you search doctored i think thats his username he has some pics of some we did for him in germany. Its an option. :)

Bushes Balljoints Hubs Nuts bolts Hub carriers track rod ends drop links   That should do it. Thanks, specifically, what should I be doing about the hubs and the hub carrier bolts?? Just arbitrarily replace? Further, if there are no cracks in the carriers, I would imagine I'll i just clean and paint them. ???   Not sure about hubs etc.

Thanks Chris, that sounds a tempting offer, however I really do enjoy working on as much as I can on my cars, and I'm thinking that this is all within my capabilities. I'm just a little unsure about the hubs, bolts etc. There seems to be lots of potential horror stories specific to these. Its an option. :)

Make sure you get decent toe links, new standard ones are fine as long as you dont start using semi slicks, if its potentially going to be tracked go buy some spitfire toe links.

Gutted that you didn't offer that device (or exist) a few years back, as I would have bitten off your arm... I may still have had the VX to be fair

Now I'm confused, toe links are at the rear arnt they???? It's the front I'm doing, and the track rod end change has been well documented.!!!!

What's the general concerns us on bushes, original rubber, or poly bush? I detect a couple of bushes are shot, so I'll have to replace the lot, but curious as to what route people have taken and what results .

I think the quote was for a full car refurb, hence why Chris is suggesting getting the track control arms (at the rear) replaced as well. And with your 'history' of trying to find a cheap part ;) then you must must steer clear of cheap TCAs or using the standard part for serious track use. Spitfire has become the standard for track goers, as they are purpose built to need.

Stick with Lotus original bushes, or the higher durometer rubber bushes that ChrisUK /Jonnyboy can source. Polybushes have a shaky history on these cars.

Ok, I get what Chris was talking about. As regards my "history" it's cheap only from a price perspective, not quality. I appreciate your comments regarding the TCA's, I won't be tracking the car so would assume standard arms and joints would suffice.

They will be fine, but check them annually for free movement and replace every 2-3yrs.

Mmmmm that's got me a little concerned, I'm not really concentrating on the rear at present, however a quick check revealed all was well with the links, joints etc. However it certainly would appear that nothing has been replaced anytime in re end history, when I get round to doing the rear end I'll play safe and replace the links and joints in any case. Thanks for the benefit of your experience on this.

Chris, how much for a bush set?

£228

that's for the full car, honestly tho.. don't just replace which ones you think need doing, just do the lot in one go :)  once you have done them once, you will not want to do them again! lol

either postal service where you send us your wishbones, we will clean them up, remove the old bushes and ball joints, we can get them coated and i will re-fit the new stuff and post them back to you,. (that's what we did for ed)

or

you can drop your car off, we do everything and you just pick it back up, cost raises slightly to cover the work in removing and re-installing them. :)

these are eds we did :)
