With no warning the VX stopped working yesterday...just wouldn't start.

Last time it did this the problem seemed to be with the fuses/relays in the boot. I took them all out and cleaned them up as they are dirty/greasy and for a couple of months or so it's been fine.

This time I tried fiddling around with the relays fuses but to no avail. There is fuel at the fuel rail. I think there is a spark - but maybe i didn't check this properly? I took coil pack out and left it resting on the engine and turned the engine over - a spark was visible jumping from one of the coils to the engine. Is that the best way to check?

On other thing that i noticed is that a fuse had melted in the fuse box at the front of the car. However, it is the headlamp one so is probably not connected?  That on it's own is a pain as the fuse seems to be 'fused' into the fuse holder.

So, any idea guys. What else could i check?

Oh yes - the yellow lotus relay in the boot - whats it for? If that has failed could that be my issue? Difficult to check that one as it is a different relay to the others.

When you say 'wouldn't start' ? Is the starter motor cranking the engine or not ?

Yes - turning over fine (well it was until the battery had had enough - put it on charge now.)  Thats why I am thinking lack of spark or fuel for some reason. So that's what the yellow one is for then?

Reset the fuel cut out button in the LHS engine bay may work

Fuel seems to be coming through and the fuel pump is whirring. Presumably that means its not the fuel cut off.

Yes the yellow relay is the starter/inhibit, so if its cranking then not that.

if the battery voltage is low the current on everything goes up

possible reason the fuse has gone also

I would try the following tests.

Its turning just won't fire

Try spare key

Check its got fuel (Rusty did that once.. lol)

spare Coil pack

Disconnect MAF

Check for EML codes

Remove all relays & reseat , move around.

Remove / check all fuses, something melted that one.. short?

buy a exige v6

Think I might call breakdown recovery out tomorrow.

If you want a hand at any point tomorrow Paul give me a shout.  Can't bring the VX to use any mule parts though as I went to start mine today and the battery was flat!

Crank position sensor? That would normally throw EML though iirc

Experiencing similar with mine, turning over, fuel priming, fuel at rail but not starting. Connected opcom which could read the abs and immobiliser but not the ecu. At the point of finding out theres no power at the ecu pins, might be worth checking

You mentioned a melted fuse ?

Are all the other fuses ok ? Not sure which fuses are relevant for the ecu, maybe 7/8 ?

So, Homestart been out but no luck. Not really interested really, just wanted to recover me to a garage. However he didn't have a low loader so one is booked for tomorrow.

He thought it was a fuel issue but I am convinced the fuel it ok. I took the cap off the fuel valve and depressed it whilst Linda turned the engine over and it spurted petrol everywhere.  i assume that would indicate the fuel pump was ok and it's not the cut off switch (Can't find that by the way? Could some oone explain where it is - is it hidden by my Courtenay charge cooler reservoir by any chance?)

The melted fuse is the headlamp one. The only two fuses at the front  that could relate to starting as far as I can see are the ignition services and battery services - they are ok so I assume the melted headlamp fuse has not had any knock on effects.

So any other ideas?

Battery is turning over the engine  fine (recharged it anyway) Tried disconnecting maf. - no difference.

If fuel is ok its go to be spark hasn't it. I thought I'd checked that yesterday but is there a best way to check for a spark?

Any other fuses/relays relating to anything that I have missed?

I would advise you swap the grey relays in the boot, one at a time, with one from the front end relay box

Ah well...given up now. Breakdown guys are going to ship it off to Matthew Bentley Racing tomorrow. He'll probably tell me it needs a new forged engine, after market ECU and suspension refresh
