One thing to consider, I have always had to sort my own insurance which is always free with Tesco, no hassle at all and the policy is mine so no massive excess. If you have cover with the dealer you should check the excess because I would expect this to be very high.

My VXT went to the technical centre last friday and my local dealer tried to get a replacement VXT but was told one wouldn't be available till March. Obviously I couldn't wait till then and said that's fine but don't try and give me the snot green 1 litre Corsa for 2 months. Last Friday I picked up a brand new fully loaded Astra Turbo SRI and I'm actually enjoying it - didn't realise I missed the comforts of regular cars - but for the winter months it suits me fine...heated leather seats hmmmmmm poof Won't miss FWD when I get my VXT back though!! Insurance-wise, when the bloke from the bodyshop rang me to let me know what car I had he wasn't sure what the situation was re insurance but I remembered someone on here saying you have to arrange your own insurance and can then claim it back off vxl when the work has been done. I'm with privilege and when I rang up to arrange temporary cover they said there would be no charge: the excess went up by £50 however, and they can only supply a covernote for 4 weeks at a time.* * Just hoping I only have to ring one more time.

Next time you're asked to pay an admin fee for the garage arranging courtesy car insurance, ask if they're FSA accredited... ;)

When mine went into Drive in Leamington Spa, they wanted me to arange insurance for the curtesy Vectra 1.6. My insurance company wanted £15 to change the car, and then £15 to change it back a week later. kicked up at the insurance brokers and they agreed to do it for nothing, then Vauxhall agreed to pay for it anyway. Just a minefield, all trying to cut costs. Make sure you get any agreement in writing, or should the worst happen, then they could wriggle out of covering you Tony

AON are great too. My Volvo has been taken in and bits removed for sending back to Sweden, they have given me a fleet car, it could be for months. AON just changed the details on the phone, no charge, no time limit.

Pain in the ass if the car has to go in for a service, then back in a week later 'cos they f*cked something up, then again because they didn't have the right parts to start with, etc. Most trips to my dealer involve 2 or 3 separate visits.

I must be psychic - First visit two weeks ago for the service, second visit last week to fit parts they didn't have in stock the first time, third visit scheduled next week to replace the centre console that they ruined in the second visit. Nothing changes

Well I've got a lovely 1ltr Corsa for at least two weeks while my car gets a respray. I keep forgetting I've got absolutely no acceleration and pulling out infront of people expecting to get up to speed and not. £500 excess too!! :o I don't know if I can cope with driving it for two weeks.

Am just about to switch from LivVic to Elephant and wondered if anyone has had experience getting fully comp cover for courtesy cars from them? The vauxhall dealership in Hemel Hempstead now required proof of fully comp cover on their cars before they give you one. On my LivVic insurance cert it states quite clearly at the top that i am fully comp covered in courtesy cars supplied when my car is being serviced or MOTed. I have just phoned Elephant and after having to go and ask, the bloke said that it would involve phoning customer services and getting a car temporarily added to the policy  So, anyone with elephant had to get their policy extended to cover a courtesy car? Cheers, Ben

I got a bog standard Corsa when mine went to the dealer, but had to pay them £15 or something to use their insurance. After that twat rear-ended me, I am using a company called Accident Exchange. They will get you an equivalent vehicle whilst yours if off the road due to a non-fault accident, then bill it back to the negligent driver's insurance. It's not quite equivalent to the VX, it'll be an S2 Liz.

Yeah but who wants 3rd party cover? You can drive it carefully but there are certain things that are out of your control and I don't fancy having to fork out a few grand if the worst should happen.

I'm with Elephant and couldn't be arsed. I figured it would be easier to get lifts to/from the dealer/work etc on the day it was being serviced than fannying about getting temporary cover notes etc.

Doesn't help, sorry...
