In case anyone is interested, i'll post this < link > to a sweedish guy who has swapped his 2.2 for a SAAB LM850 turbo engine from a 9-3 (i think).

Phew! Amazing. Wonder how it handles? Would the ECU replacement work on an standard 2.2 Ecotec?

Probably not - think its custom for the SAAB. Couldn't say for sure, though...

Cheers, Paul.

No, the SAAB has another ECU. The Badster has a stand-alone NIRA system.

Out of interest, how will you controll boost with this installation? What I mean is, is the blower constantly "on" boost without the ECU knowing how to dump unwanted boost?

Cheers, Paul.

To quote from an article on a Vortech kit

At part throttle, the bypass valve bleeds excess boost to the air, making the impeller of the 'charger as distinctly audible as a taxiing Lear jet.

:D

I guess this means the Vortech will always be creating boost, the BOV (or By-Pass Valve) regualtes boost flow to the TB

Sounds plausable!

Do you know what PSI this chager makes?

Cheers, Paul.

Its a Vortech V9, runs typically between 10-20 psi, Maximum airflow is 800 CFM

Holy crap! :o At that PSI you will be running between 17.6 and 24.7 effective compression ratio assuming you keep the 10.5 compression ratio of the 2.2!!!

For reference, Hitec and Regal both run max 15 effective compression ratio. I'm no (mechanical) engineer but those kinds of compressions are likely to cause real stress on the engine?!

Cheers, Paul.

Don't worry........ and keep you knickers on! :P I won't be bringing her above 250hp

There are loads of 2.2 Ecotecs running with the Vortech set-up. Browse around the boost section at j-body.org

Word there is for 2.4 / 2.2 Ecotec
- 6-8 PSI Non-Intercooled with proper fuel and timing mods
- 8-12 PSI Intercooled with proper fuel and timing mods

5 PSI I reckon is my starting point :)

Good plan. 5.8 PSI == same effective compression as Regal. ;)

Cheers, Paul.

Speedster,

Your s/c project sound like it's going to be fantastic! thumbsup
Well done for having the bottle to go down this road!

I hope I'm not taking too many liberties by asking this.....

I think it would be really useful if you could put together a 'guide' while you are undertaking this project.
A written guide outlining the pitfalls etc with photos (Haynes style, but better!!!!) would be ideal and I'm sure would encourage others (myself included  ) to undertake this conversion.

Perhaps it could then be PDF'd and kept on the site?

Good luck with the project and keep us all informed of the progress.

chinky chinky

Hi Rob. Yup, I will put together a set of notes + pics + pizza menu covering the complete installation. thumbsup
