you could do it for a lot less than 10K if you were willing to get the spanners out yourself. I think you'd be looking at the price of the engine plus about £1200 for an ecu, mounts, hoses, etc and a lot of time and effort!!

IIRC (from seloc) the honda conversion cost a six figure sum to develop....

I just hope this debate doesnt develop the same way it has over there :(

Definitely wouldn't take an Audi 1.8T (too dull).

Agreed (although I was behind an Audi Elise on a run once and it was very rapid). IMO, it's not about having a turbo (or any forced induction) engine in the VX.

>this one< is pretty much the benchmark if you're talking Audi. Heavier though, so getting away from the Lotus principles...

I have heard from a couple of journalists that the Type R and Audi engine conversions are crap because the additional weight combined with the engines being transverse obviously creates more weight transfer at the back end. Fair enough if you want enough power but i would not compromise what these cars are all about, the handling. If i win the lottery next Saturday i would like an N/A with ITBs and a bit of internal work, i think 200bhp is enough for my limited talent :D -Rob

Good point, we're all getting a bit carried away with monster power here. I don't think that was PB's point really.

You could always hack the rear of the car to peices and slot in a B) big block v8 454 cui thumbsup but the down side is that the front wheels would never touch the ground

Short Block V8 GM engine. - Bit of mods to fit, but the engine isn't that big in size, so should fit a treat!

I can get my hands on a Honda engine pretty easy...

Does anyone in the UK fit the Honda engine

I also know of a 200bhp 2.0l Clio wiliams engine, i wonder if that would fit

Oh my god I've just shot my bolt all over the screen when i saw that picture of the honda K20 in a VX!! Imnotworthy Imnotworthy

Richy, I've been thinking about this swap ever since i got the VX and put my foot down only to be dissapointed by the lumpy power delivery of the VXT. I would love to put one of these lumps in a VX. How come you can get a cheap engine? how much are we talking? If i do mine, it wont be a problem to do another so we could work something out?

I have a mate who repairs damaged cars, he has had a few total loss TypeRs [rear damage] pass through his hands and both the engines were mint in them, one had only 6k on it B)

Ive never really thought about that engine and the VX mating!
Untill i saw speedy's piccy Imnotworthy

Them getting another honda lump wouldn't be a problem, I shall find out prices monday thumbsup

Would you do the swap yourself Scottie

Richy,

Yes, i would do it my self. there is a company called horizon motorsport in the midlands who are looking into a conversion kit, so i asume this would be the mounts, driveshafts etc. I'm not too worried about the engine managment electronics, thats easy enough to sort out. but if horizzon come up with mounts and driveshafts, i dont see any problem in doing the conversion.

I have heard from a couple of journalists that the Type R and Audi engine conversions are crap because the additional weight combined with the engines being transverse obviously creates more weight transfer at the back end.

the VX has a transverse arragement engine anyway, the Honda K20 engine is lighter than the VXT engine also.

For me its not about out and out speed, i've never been over 130 in the car, Its more about power delivery and usable rev range ;)

How about a Ford Duratec like this: Clicky

The idea of have a Vauxhall with a Ford engine must appeal to some strange part of my brain!

I'd stick in the LSJ super-charged ecotec - producing 200 bhp at the wheels right out of the box. Fits the car because its the same block as the 2.2. Change of flywheel and it will fit the gearbox too. Would need some messing to get the ECU to work with the car... Ta, Paul.

One went on ebay a couple of months ago for £1300, including ecu...

You can buy it as a crate engine brand new from GM (£3500), but its missing the ECU, pully, belt, pumps and starter.

I'd much rather see a SMG or DSG gearbox in mine than some weird engine.. As for the engine, I'd just like to stick a compressor on and that's about it :) Also a quaife diff would be nice along with the extra power :)

I've had my share of revvy, peaky engines and also created my own sometimes with rather questionable choices of cam grinds. I was the first on the block with a 4A-GE (quite revolutionary in its time when the VW GTI still had an 8-valve lump) and loved the feel when the TVIS kicked in the second intake tract and the rush to the almost 8000rpm redline (unheard of in a street motor in '86) was so addictive. Gradually I got a bit tired of it all. Having to thrash my MX-5 to 7000 all the time to go anywhere got a bit tiring when I wasn't in full max. attack mode. I've driven various cars with the Toyota engine which is in the 111R. It's a lovely motor with a great party trick power delivery, but man it has a finicky power curve. You always have to be on top of it, always in the right gear, to keep up. Find yourself in the wrong gear in those cars, or in a current VTEC, and you're dead. For me the motor in the NA is one of its selling points. Sure I'd like a bit more power, but I like the power delivery. Having said all that, it would be fun to have a small Ferrari V8 back there, just for the sound...
