I successfully installed the Apexi SAFC-2 today. Here is a picture of the unit running. Picture shows sensor readings for RPM, Throttle Position and Kick. The Cor: up the left side is the air/fueling correction level the SAFC is transmitting to the ECU, currently zero because I am running with defaults. I will post installation details later.....

Installation in progress. Here I am connecting up a number of items: 1. The grounds (2 off) are connected to the ground supplying the ECU, in front of the head breather. It is suggested that each ground be connected about an inch apart with a particular one nearest the ECU. 2. The MAP sensor at the Throttle body (send and recieve) 3. Spice into the Kick/Knock sensor at the rear of the head on the gearbox side of the engine 4. Tapping into the loom on the far side to pickup remaining sensors and power

Hooking up.... here I am tapping into loom to access the Tachometer, the Throttle Position Sensor and a Power line. Not shown here are the connections to the MAP sensor and the Kick sensor. I spliced into these directly.

Looks nice  thumbsup  how many hours work is it?

Took approx 10 hours. Cabling was most of it :P Routing the cables from the dash took a bit of working out. My intended route was a no-go. You can't get from the front of the car to the engine bay in the fiber tunnel under the driver door (RHD) as there is foam padding packed into the tunnel holding the radiator water pipes in place, in numerous locations within the tunnel too. This meant going under the black plastic cover that inside the cockpit, over the chassis beam. You can get an exit point into the engine bay at the bottom of the chassis beam. Once I had this figured I needed to prepare a loom. The loom included with the SAFC is nowhere long enough and as there is not enough room for a 12 way cable under the chassis cover I needed to make up three 4 way cores to spread the space the cabling required.

Then there was sorting out where to connect everything! Power, the MAP Sensor and the Knock Sensor were easy. RPM and Throttle postion required some work with a multimeter, some tailors pins and digging around the internet. Then grab a cuppa, put on a good CD and simply solder everything together, double wrapping all connections to keep the water out.

After installation when the ignition is powered on for the first time the ECU throws a error code. I don't know which one but i guess its coming from the knock sensor. Once you set-up the SAFC-2 for the car this error code disappears. Will post more specifics on the install later (tomorrow coz its bed time) :sleepy:

I took the car out for a drive when the job was completed and all is well. Now I need to work on fueling configurations!

Very nice! I've got an Apexi RSM, and that took long enough to wire up - so I don't envy fitting one of them! Be interested to see what improvements you can make with it though...

Can you actually change the ECU settings with, as a piggy-back, it or only monitor the signals??

Now you need also a wide band lambda meter to check carefully the fuel ratio, don't play without a wide band lambda meter, you could damage the engine if running on full trhottle in lean condition!! :o
I want to take the safc 2,i'm watching on ebay one at 219$ :P ,where did you take it??

My dad is interested in one of these. Is this available on the NA and the Turbo? Does the system have preset settings? Is it recommended the car have a remap first or can this do wht the map would do, ie. sorting out the overfueling?

  • It can monitor and replay the following data channels in Numerical, Analog Meter and Graph displays:
  • Intake Manifold Vacuum/Boost Pressure, Air Flow Capacity, Intake Manifold Pressure, Karmann Frequency, Engine RPM, Throttle Position, and Air Flow Correction %. Due to the complexity of this product, A'PEX recommends having the S-AFC and other A'PEX electronics installed and tuned by authorized A'PEX Power Excel Shops.
  • It optimizes fuel-air ratio by modifying the sensor signal of either the air-flow meter or the pressure meter in vehicles.
  • has an adjustable fuel curve that can be set at twelve-point user-definable levels in increments of 200 RPM. The fuel adjustment will be within a range of +/- 50% at each of the user-defined setting points.
  • Its Deceleration Air Flow Correction function can curing the erratic idle and halt the problems associated with open-atmosphere blow-off valves on hot-wire air-flow meter systems.

As far as I am aware you can use this on both an NA and boosted engine. No presets other than zero adjustment. When programming you can save 2 seperate configurations for recall later. As clipping_point pointed out you can adjust fueling at 12 user defined points along the RPM range, with seperate values for Lo and Hi Throttle positions. I have the SuperChips remap which is fine but it does not address my set-up specifically (Induction + Full Milltek). I have notice that I appear to run rich in and around midrange RPM. I intend to use the SAFC to sort that out, for starters.
