The BMC is definitly paper based (like a standrad filter) not foam. I've never oiled mine. The web site says it's washable. No mention of oil.

BMC Air filters

Do you know which one of those models you have?

It doesn't have a number of it and I didn't buy it but going on the dimensions I'd say it was the CDA70-150. (length 200 Diameter of airbox 150 Engine side tube diameter 70)

I've just taken it apart. The filter element is a kind of metalic gauze. I notice on the site that you can buy replacement elements. Mines filthy inside. Maybe i should buy a new element befroe putting it back?

How do Courtenay modify the airbox - is it just by drilling? I'm very tempted by the BMC or Apexi

This is a brand new Bosch part number 0 280 218 051 in original box - Vauxhall Part Number 9201425 that retails at over £125.

Just a note when requiring a new AMM :beat:

but courtenays sell the standard amm's for £100

think someone should try this apexi or bmc on a turbo and see if they blow it up. :)

then let me know the results

have a look at this interesting thread from a little while ago http://www.vx220.org...opic=38850&st=0

heres a pic of P11 COV's BMC CDA http://www.vx220.org...topic=30474&hl=

It seems like a lot of people would like to replace the airbox but no-one dares to risk the extra £100 AMM test - how about we get enough people who want it to offer to help replacement in case of a failure - I'm sure people would offer £10-20 to test this out - all we then need is 5+ people so that the guinea pig can test it out knowing that a replacement AMM should it fail in the testing will be replaced with the help of interested parties?

Hold your horses TonyKL, once I have confirmed what the cause of the problem is (generally thought to be it over heating) and a way to stop it, I will take the plunge. However if this becomes too expensive then I shall drop the cause. Currently the cone is £60 and any pipe work and brackets to allow fresh air ~£20-£50. Placement and cooling will be key in this being a success. The current airbox maybe the only option due to engine bay temps but I love to solve a problem :D All good things come to those who wait. :P

Sorry been busy on holiday and the such like.. Having a 4 month old is taking up a lot of spare time at the moment. So will try to progress this in the next month or so. Have had a few responses back from various people and they have suggested keeping the backend of the air box as to shield heat from the engine bay. Need to get the wheel off and have a look to see what is possible.. PS on hols next 2 weeks so don't expect this anytime soon :P Will buy a spare AMM and run on that for a few weeks, and then buy the filter. Just need to wait for a few other responses.. :)

I know I am probably tempting fate here, but like Paul, I've been running a BMC filter on my car since I put it back on the road. I've done about 1500-2000 miles in pretty varied conditions, and including 2 track days. So far the management system has not reported any problems with the AMM* * Apart from the end of the session at the National, when the turbo hose parted company from the turbo. ONce someone from TMS had reconnected the hose, the engine management light came on. I read the error code with my PDA, and it reported a fault with the AMM. I was fairly sure this was just a result of driving the car back to the paddock with the hose disconnected, so I reset the light (got some strange looks doing that via my PDA 20 metres away from my car :D ) and it has not come on since.

Gary add some photos of the BMC positioning and I assume it is carbon fibre box. ? :D

The idea is that you wash the element and re-oil it. I've been running a while now with the CDA (http://www.verboom.n...0219/index.html) and it works very well. But you do have to clean it every once in a while. BTW, I just use the standard K&N cleaning kit, does the job.

CC this was the other option I have been thinking of to add additional venting/ducting/snorkel. Just want to remove the panel filter as the filter IMO is not very efficient

tempting the stupid button here, but where do people get the lovely stainless/gloss black hard pipes from the filter - hose before the TB? as for killing the MAF. In my experience (dicking about in the automotive industry with air flow correction software) MAF's will "break" with excessive heat and being dropped lol, they will give gash readins with things like Oil/crap on the mesh which could lead to failiure. Id like to find a boxed apexi filter as that appears to filter rather well. as does an HKS filter...

Depends on your deffinition of efficiency as a paper element is the most efficeint at removing particulates, hence why in the experiment thats what they used to catch what was not filtered by the elements on test. The aim of the engine maufacturer is to deliver the best life possible so they use a paper element, not to mention it's dirt cheap.

However it does have a high pressure loss charateristic so the apex does seem to have a good balence of filtering and low pressure loss. Although i would rather have seen a comparison of pressure loss v mass flow rate instead of the increase in bhp.

Rob

PS If your going to install one and need any help with the cross sectional areas, etc. then PM me.

I have one of these filters on my Z20LET Astra Coupe Turbo. It is a really good bit of kit. The sound is nuts too!!! I ordered mine from Summit Racing in the US. You need the 70mm neck kit - part number you need (not sure about 2.2) is APX-500-A027. Hope that helps. Oh - cost about £70 including the postage and import tax. The Astra is currently running stage 4+ (i.e. stage 4 and a bit! lol) - but Im getting bored of FWD.... hence why I'm here....... :)
