My suspicions as to the reason for this were confirmed when i discovered that these parts rather than being a low quality stainless are actually mild steel  . I'm not to bothered as this shouldn't effect the performance of the system, but maybe a little surprized that Miltek are going to these extreems to keep the cost down.

It's mild steel?

can anyone confirm?!!!!!

The Milltek exhaust piping is still slightly magnetic, which means they use stainless with less nickel and chrome content. Which explains why it shows a little corrosion and brown colouration. I have been working a lot with stainless steel in my career, and one of the things I learned is that ss 304 can become a bit magnetic wenn heated to the glowing point. So it's possible it really is 304 ss.

Hmmmm - this could be potentially libellous, no? If the zorst is marketed as full stainless (which IIRC it is) and parts are actually mild steel then it's a trade descriptions act job. Otherwise, Alex Os is libelling Milltek.

Whoa.

As to the OP, I'm all for investigation and level-headed discussion, and don't think you're being picked on at all. However I'm pretty sure JT's accusation of 'aggressive' tone was due to the TITLE of your post i.e. 'APPALLING QUALITY' (I've fixed the spelling for ya ;) ) and not the first sentence of the post. I wouldn't describe what you see as 'appalling', but I certainly share your concern about the appearance, especially given the cost of the zorst.

Sorry, missed this. The Milltek system is indeed full stainless steel save for one part - the flange which is non stainless deliberately. People get wrapped up in the concept that stainless is a billion times better than mild steel and the fact is that stainless is only better in one respect - resistance to corrosion. Stainless is actually pretty crap in two key areas than mild steel, firstly it will warp at lower temperatures in construction and secondly it is relatively crap at impact resistance and tends to crack rather than deform. The VXT (and to a lesser extent the NA) are harsh environments for the exhaust, they are also very short systems and for the main part a lot is very exposed to road grime. The flanges are designed to be a close welded structure to maximise airflow and a stainless version would potentially suffer tube warping if welded so closely, a mild steel one will not. They are also full machined flanges not pressed or stamped so the quality is very high. TO date I've not seen one fail and even if it did it would be covered under warranty. As regards polishing, the polishing process (done properly) does actually generate quite a lot of heat in the tube, too much heat and you'll deform the bend and potentially either knock the system out of fit or even affect the airflow for this reason Milltek only polish what is absolutely necessary as the look is less important that the performance. For me a fully polished exhaust is right up there with neons as a performance accessory, by all means do it but don't do it make the car faster cos it simply aint gonna happen :P

Will take some pictures and put up here on the weldings inside the pipes on my Milltek. Think they should put some effort polish them instead if the performance is their main target. Haven´t mount mine yet but i´m sure it is a very good exhaust system and don´t want to change it to another system. Lots of people seems very pleased with it.

Chris, send me a picture (john@thorneymotorsport.co.uk) when from whom you bought it and I'll have a look for you. Even if you aren't the original owner I'm sure we will replace it FOC if its faulty. :)
