Elaine - I have added 'ex-batt' chickens to the list of second-hand animals I will be 'entertaining', when I get my dream home with lots of land for recycled beasties
Cool.
We wouldn't be without our hens now, they're the easiest to care for pets we've ever owned.
Every day we simply water their droppings into our lawns/raised beds, pick the few droppings & dirty bedding out of their coop by
rubber gloved hand
(there's no wee-wee as such, that's the white part of bird's poo), then plump their straw/wood chippings.
We change their water every 3 days
(with an added splash of cider vinegar every now & then).
Top up their layers pellets when they're running low
(after throwing away the dregs).
Every few weeks we empty the coop completely, check for beasties, then add fresh bedding.
Twice a year they need to be wormed
(in food), dusted with anti-mite powder
unless you suspect red mite before that time, then you'd dust them immediately, and their coop needs cleaning with poultry shield
(to stop the beasties).
How easy is that? And you get yummy fresh eggs every day of course.
