This thread is ten years old and well out of date, any original factory fitted z22se engine is now at least 14 years old and thus any chance of free warranty / recall / rework is totally zero.

If your engine is quiet on cold start up the chains should be okay, if you hear a rattle for a few seconds then one of the tensioners has issues = new chains are required. You can also get a similar noise from a cracked exhaust manifold, but that is easier to spot - loosen the exhaust manifold heat shield and look for a crack between cylinders two and three.

There really is no short way of replacing the timing chains on a vx220, yes chains - both should be changed at the same time. The guides go brittle with old age and this is now the most common reason for failure.

Remove OSR wheelarch liner

Follow Haynes Manual and replace the chains, it's damn tight and a few bolts are a git on the vx220

Good luck fellow DIYers :grouphug:

ps: or just change them for peace of mind, I can usually source genuine chain kits cheaper than pattern parts

After ten years they have zero interest in anything thumbsdown

Timing chains should be considered as something which will need replacing sooner rather than later.

Had a look at the kilometer-long other guide on here... any chance you have made a guide with your simpler/shorter technique ?

I need to do mine at some point also, so would be interested in the guide.

I'd be interested in a shorter guide for DIY. It was be easier to fly Vocky down under to do the job than get the car to him. ;-)

When you did mine, one of the bits exploded as you were removing it and scared the crap out of us.... can't remember what it was.

They are silent so far on LY36, but it is the kind of thing I would prefer to anticipate rather than to face it all of a sudden. Can one still bring them to you and watch the magic happen while pouring you a beer ? If so where ?(I am a noob) What's your price ? I can offer my services of picture-taking and tutorial writing also if that sounds like a good idea to you !

On Vockys recommendation I had mine done by a chap called Daz (from Z22SE) who lives in Cwmbran.

No afraid not, it was a good while ago on my old VX.

I supplied the chains and he did the work. He's a mechanic by trade but also has a massive workshop next to his house which is fully kitted out with lift etc so did  it one Saturday morning. Bit fiddly but dint look too bad so I'll probably be giving it a go myself this time.

There are a few people scattered around the country who will do the chain kits, Chris_uk is located near Leeds and ideal for anyone located 'up north' :P

Not sure Daz does them anymore, but I'm sure he would help if asked - ideal for anyone located in south Wales area

Or you get me

located in the Home counties area

You should budget around the £500 - £600 mark to get both chain kits replaced, I would guess it would be slightly more at a garage so budget around the £750 mark.

Chris by tensioner do you mean the belt tensioner as I don't think it would be a good idea to fit new chains and not replace the chain tensioners that come in the GM kit?
