Where can i exactly find the engine number?
Looked on the engine, certificate of conformity and other papers.
Does the number always begin with TA?
It's behind the oil filter housing, quite difficult to see.
Personally, I am replacing my chain for the following reasons:
1) The car is in bits having a major rebuild making it an easier job to do now.
2) The car is in the effected engine range.
3) The car has done 45k.
4) I got all the bits from AutoVaux for about £100 and the only other real cost is a little bit of my time.
To me on that basis it makes sense to do it for little cost, just for peace of mind. If the car wasn't in bits and off the road I would not replace it unless there was a specific problem I was aware of so I fully appreciate where Thorney is coming from.

That's an understatement.
I can't manage to see it.

It's at the backside of the engine right?
I saw the oil filter housing but couldn't see the back of the engine with all the leads and stuff there.

We had one booked in a few weeks ago specifically for a timing chain replacement and 40k service, when he turned up we looked at it and said it was fine and asked why he'd brought it in and he said that he'd 'heard' the chains can break at 40k and wanted it replaced as a precaution. I'm all for keeping people aware but sheer scaremongering is exactly that.

I'm not worried about the whisles anymore, nothing to do with the chain.

I go with the facts....
fact one: if your engine number is below 11064500 it was fitted with the smaller oil jet, normally 52 plate and above have the later spec chain kit.
I could see the number on the filter house with a mirror and a torch pointed at the mirror.
The number on my engine is 11134451
So, since the number had got to be higher then 11064500 i have the bigger oil jet.

I certainly feel more comfortable now.

Thanks

After ten years they have zero interest in anything
Timing chains should be considered as something which will need replacing sooner rather than later.

Had a look at the kilometer-long other guide on here... any chance you have made a guide with your simpler/shorter technique ?

Just bring it to Vocky to have it done.
Then stand from a side to see the Vauxhall gynaecologist do his miracle act.
