Am I right in saying that insurance companies, whilst happy to allow modifications (at a price), will not actually insure them. So if you get rear ended and your sparkly new Larini exhaust gets binned they won't pay out for the value of the modification....? Although I think Adrian Flux are the only people I know who actually insure the for the value of mods as well.... but they'll want you to have owned the car for a year or so.

yep spot on.

Also elephant don't insure none std shocks, when on their site it says modified suspension they only cover lowering springs.

For what it's worth if you've had the car a year Flux will normally price match or beat your best quote.

For me too- they've never been anyting near competitive. Insurance is a funny old game.

BTW, not all insurance companies refuse to replace modified parts. They must state that they replace modified with standard. The Admiral group however are one such group of thieving gypsies who will only replace wih standard.

I would suggest that a 'chip' is now just a generic term for some kind of electronic modification to the ECU. Surely all cars that are 'tuned' nowadays are remapped and don't have a physical 'chip? As regards nnsurance companies inspection of vehciles i have had 2 claims that have shown they they don't look very carefully. 1. A total write off with induction, VSE and ABS switch and no mods declared. - a no quibble full pay out. 2. A bodywork and 2 new wheels claim while the car had VXR speedlines wheels on not the std turbos. They repalced the speed lines!!! PS Its not big and its not clever and now my car is insured declaring a 'chip' and aftermarket alloys. Still considering the tyres, pads, indcater stalks, stereo, amourfend etc etc.

they used to be like that for me as well, but this year flux were £60 cheaper than elephant so I went with them - no-one else was anywhere near the elephant price so I'm about as pleased as you can be for spending almost £600 on insurance ;)

flux have never been competitive for me either. prob cos of my age. no one could get anywhere near elephants renewal price for me

its daft when you think about it replacing them for standard parts only.
id bet that a standard exhaust system from vauxhall costs more than a milltek..

and id like to see how much a set of new VX wheels are as opposed to a set of 500 pound team dynamics etc..

Just had Admiral call me about this again, after having been referred it to their underwriters for the past 2 weeks. Apparently the underwriters have come back with a lengthy response as to why they won't cover remaps, but do cover 'chips', due to the differences between the 2. They are due to email it to me in full today, so I'll post it up here when I've got it. Hopefully someone who knows something about mapping can review it and check whether they're talking b*llocks, as if I can't get insured with Admiral I'll be looking at about a £200 hike compared to last year :beat:

I am insured with a company called Auto Torque, cheapest by far for me. £409.00 all in for a NA including track cover, but the excess increases to £1800 for this, but better than no cover. Its limited to 5000 miles, £300 excess. Was quoted £750 by Direct Line. I have a clean licence, no claims made in over 10 years.
