OK, I dnt understand this one, bring out a cut down PS3 for only slightly less money but remove wifi, smaller hd, and no backward compat with old ps2 games. And stop selling the 60gig version as soon as all current units are sold. Is this a marketing ploy to get me to buy the current 60 gig PS3 as i am now tempted given that they are gimping the new one. Added to the fact that you can get the 60 gig one for 350 with 2 games and 2 blueray discs, or 369 with 4 games!. So do I get one now (and wait for some good games to come out) or wait and end up with gimped version? I have heard that the online stuff is tat compared to Xbox, and friends have said they would rather pay for the xbox live than use the free sony one. is this the case? help!!!!! :)

I noticed in a paper yesterday afternoon that Argos were advertising the a 60Gb PS3 with 2 games for £349.95. Yet the package on offer for the 40Gb version and 2 games was priced at £349.97?????? I want to get a PS3 eventually, but I wpon't be forced into paying that kind of money. I'll still wait until they come down in price, I hate being ripped off.

 you're not being ripped off! as said the 60gb version will not be sold here once current stock has run out and i doubt they will reduce the price anymore a blu-ray player, multimedia centre, and games console in one for £350 what more do people want

Of course we're being ripped off, we have a less capable console than the US and Japan and it costs a fortune when compared to the prices they charge in Japan and the US. Same story with the i-phone,less capable, but more expensive. I have a PC for multi-media, I'll eventually get an HD DVD player (but I'll wait to see which succeeds from Blue-Ray and the other one). For all the hype a PS3 is a console, with a few extra's, those extra's, most people already have dedicated kit for. Granted, it's a fantastic bit of kit, for someone who doesn't have a PC or DVD player. But be honest, most people with a PS3 will have an HD TV, hence the primary reason for getting it. I'd hazard a guess that most people with an HD TV, also have a DVD player (HD or not, mine isn't yet) and a PC.

i use the PS3 to stream photos, videos to a big plasma screen and all my music (which then comes through my stereo system) off of my laptop wirelessly, i wouldn't want a big PC sat next to the tv in the lounge it would look awful even if they did come down a little bit more in price, what are you going to be saving? it hardly seems worth waiting IMO... but then again i hate waiting for things and when something i really want is out i get it :)

Dan, you've clearly done very well for yourself to be able to do that. thumbsup I on the other hand have to be a bit more restrained with my spending. :( :D

I'll certainly get a PS3 one day, but I'll only use it as a games console, so I'll have to wait for the prices to drop. I waited a good 2-3 years for the PS2 to come down to what I see as a reasonable price.

i did actually pre-order and received three the day they came out, the reason for this was to sell the other two and hopefully make some money to cover the one i wanted to keep! didn't work out due to supply and demand etc so had to return the other two for a refund which was hard work! is there none on e-bay at a better price? chinky chinky

I'm not sure I would have pre-ordered one at the full price TBH. Only reason I've got one is that I worked for Sony Playstation and got mine cheap and before general public release :-D

I'm surprised you were unable to shift them, I guess Sony made sure they had enough 'in country' for the launch (something they regularly c0ck up).

I've checked E-bay and they generally go for very close to the rrp still. :( Hey-ho, patience is a virtue and all that, or at least that's what I'm told!!

Tony, that must have been great getting your hands on one so soon, do you get the games before general release too, that must be cool.

there were plenty in supply, i could of probably sold them but wouldn't of made any profit as checked e-bay at the time (and there were loads on there, people with the same idea etc).

if you bought one with a few games you could always sell the games on to make some money back?
i recently sold rainbow6 on e-bay for £30, after having it for a couple of months and only paying £40 for it anyway. Also i sold Genji (didn't even bother playing it) and think i got about £20 something for that and it was meant to be awful!

I don't work at SCEE anymore but whilst I was there it was pretty good. As we all had test PS3's (no security on them) on our desks we could install all the pre-release versions of the games on them and play them networked in the office - was pretty cool.

Actually off to the pub tonight with my Sony friends, have to find out what they have :D

That sounds like a very good idea Dan, I may look into that, particularly with christmas coming up. thumbsup

My problem is all the other things I have to do with money, car, house, holidays (this year's was particularly expensive). :D

I definitely think I'll have a look at E-Bay and the larger packages.

Tony, I wonder if your old work-mates have had a decent demo of GT5 yet? :jump:

Well..... I got one! I got 60gig version, extra pad, 2 games (res fall of man, motorstorm), hdmi cable and a blu ray film for £369 which whilst seems expensive, if I had got a new 40gig one for 299 i would have to spend quite abit more on top to get the other bits i got, and at the end of it my console would not have been as good! seems v strange as the new 40gig represents much worse value! anyway..... I actually like the console a lot more than I thought I would, motorstorm is class, I love it. infact because of it I havnt even tried the other game yet. blue ray film just looked WOW!, and whilst the software lacks the polish of the m$oft UI's its not as bad as I thought it would be. To sum it up the hardware is v polished and feels like an expensive bit of kit compared to the xbox360, easily worth the price tag on that front(just need some more quality games!!!!!!) but the xbox360 live service and general UI's are lots better and show much more thought. If you could combine the two it would be one hell of a console! I guess I have the best of both worlds now as If a game only comes out on PS3 or is better on PS3 (cant think of any yet but hey!)then I can get that, otherwise i get the 360 version. I am certainly not a fan boy of either PS3 or 360, just an out and out gamer. Man this gaming habbit is expensive! oh my gamer tag is Vespy on both 360 and PS3 so feel free to add me thumbsup

PS3 rawks :D I cannot believe they are removing some of the features that make it great. Wireless is surely a MUST and one of the big selling points was that it was included as standard? What next wired controllers? 40GB? Surely the only way for the hardrive capacity was UP! I've been playing Super Stardust HD and Colin McRae of late, great fun. Got bored trying to beat some of the stupid level 4 tickets in Motorstorm, infuriating computer AI. Was considering Warhawk too but PES 2008 is out soon and that will take over!!

for £20 warhawk is a bargain and well worth it, but yeah got PES2008 on pre-order and once that's out i'll be addicted

i didn't think much of DIRT, bit too arcadey for me

the wireless was a big selling point for me too thumbsup

Dan, what format videos do you stream? more to the point will it stream AVi (non divx encrypted) files? it appears for a media pc its a bargin as Linux goes on with ease and then opens you up for all kinds of PCesque use for fark all cash (spec up a media PC go on...) think an xbox 360 + hd drive and PS3 might be excessive though
