I can only think that I'm using the wrong screenwash....
This evening I couldn't see jack for the smears
How long have you had it? Perhaps it needs replacing, or maybe try a dry run to recoat the screen with silicon?

The pack advises that you clean the screen before each journey, use the wiper dry (to recoat the screen with silicone) occasionally, and don't use it when the screen is icy.

Our cars only have the one blade, stating the obvious i know, but becaus of that it is effectively upside down when its over the drivers side. Thus whith the direction of air flow at speeds it will be generiting lift on the wiper arm and could see it lifting off the screen.
