I had concerns about this problem and suggested to Top Gear Automotive that I should change them for the 10.9 bolts. They recommended 12.9 bolts and so I went with them. £8 for the lot.
No problems...so far.

I hope their insurance is up to date!

...

I think i will get them changed for peace of mind every other service. This might be overkill but it doesn't bear thinking about if this were to occur at speed. Now whether fitting the 8.8's will give you any warning that the HCB's are knackered before they break I don't know. I remember a photo on this site showing a bolt that had been removed which was bent and chewed which is a lot better than a broken one, i wonder what grade of s/s it was?

This one ?

It was the standart Opel bolt i.e. 8.8 ...

My brother phoned me about your car. He lives in Woodbridge and this happened yards from his house. He also said that it took the recovery guys hours to get the car on the flatbed. My first thought when he described the scene was this. Glad the car is not too damaged and you are ok. Could have been a lot worse!

Marco Polo well done for finding that. Do you know if they were off the front or rear. I wonder how close they were to the big let go

Well, not hard to find... They were mine... I am not going to remove that picture from the website for quiet a long time... People need to be aware of that weakness in design/maintenance...

They were on the right side, rear hub carrier...

I still wonder how it would have finished if I had not changed them...
(they were a deep pain in the @$$ to remove !!)

So lets get this straight, because theres a lot of trees and lamposts on the corners of the roads that i like to drive.. Do i buy 10.9 [im guessing that 10.9 is the tensile] bolts - or should i just fit new 8.8 bolts? - i wanna get these done asap.

if you don't drive on track and don't hit the kerbs a lot  then i would go for the 8.8's

you can but ask. Make sure you get them with the longer head. The shorter headed ones tend to round off i've been told

Have you emailed that pic to Vaux tech centre - they may decide a re-call is valid after all!

I had this happen to mine but a rear wheel. Thsy took an hour to get nine onto a flat bed too. The problem is moving the car when the wheel is tucked inside the wheel arch. My bodywork was damaged by my incident.

As regards recalls I tried contacting Vauxhall about it but they are just not interested.

Their view is that they have not heard about this problem. well the have form me but that makes no difference.

I started this topic at the time and you'll see a lot of people have had simalar problems.

This was my post when mine first happened.

Also on the subject of replacement bolts. I already had some 10.9's which I had intended putting on. I took them to Gugliami motorsport (scarred stiff) who also have a lot of elise and VX experience including racing and they were happy to put them on for me.
