Guys like Urijah Faber are awsome at what they do, but it's generally stalk, a few shots, then grapple, which although extremely physically demanding is not in the same league as the fitness levels of someone in the same weight catagory in boxing, say... Manny Pacquiao who is flat out working for 36 mins, not 25. Like I mentioned, that's almost 50% longer, at a higher workrate.

Boxers work harder for longer, so how can it be less demanding...?

you are obviously passionate about the old dying noble art! lol
all mma fighters box lol you blatantly no nothing about training as an mma fighter!
infact a lot of mma fighters partake in boxing matches for fun! NAME ONE

the reason why you know of no names of any high profile mma fighters that can box is because they are MMA FIGHTERS!

look at it regards to calories to try and explain! a boxer will burn slightly less calories per hour than an mma fighter! EXACTLY!! Boxers are fitter. They train themselves for fitness not for bulk. It's easier for them to work that hard

if you say as you mention Manny Pacquiao a 55kg 30 year old, fights a 36min snooze fest wtf are you mad...? cos he cant finish the guy wearing pillows (he ko'd Ricky Hatton, Erik Morales as well as 35 others!) and you compare him to ken shamrock NO I compared him to Urijah Faber. Have you not heard of him...? p4p one of the best MMA EVER!!! a 46 year old 90 kg man doing 25 mins of boxing wrestling takedowns ground work ect then the calories burnt would equate to around the same good old ken! Yeah, I've a soft spot for old Shamrock too, but hey....

iram

tbh, my conversation was with Danny. You only chirped in from time to time, and talked lots of pooh. No offense, but I think it's you who has very little experience in either of these fighting styles. I have trained/sparred with World champions, represented my country, and trained with a European MMA champion. Not to mention had nearly 30 contests myself. What the fcuk have you done...? Bite me :)

The only names I mentioned there were Urijah Faber, Manny Pacquiao and Ken Shamrock. I don't claim to have met any of them. Don't know what you are talking about....?

In addition, you've failed to corroborate any of your bullshit statements about MMA figters who box 'for fun', and just keep talking rubbish about pound for pound hall of fame fighters. Pacquiao cannot punch, lol. Yeah nice one monkey!

Now Neggy is fit as a fiddle, and hard as nails.

Neggy-Nathan Beer,never met him but what a co-incedence JJJ!!
He works with my bro,he's fighting in the Celtic Manor soon & I'm going to watch him in action, why don't you come along?
My bro has been talking to him about starting MMA as he's leaving Krav Maga too.
I did'nt know his nickname was Neggy though, rings a bell.Did he used to knock about with a guy called David Pinch do you know?? I used to be good mates with Pinchy about 14 years ago & I'm sure that a guy called Neggy used to come down to Newport with him. thumbsup
As for training, the class I'm probably gonna start I think is in Cwmbran stadium,my mate Jeff Deakin trains there, maybe you know him then as it's only down the road from you but then again he's from Newport.

Would love to come along to the Celtic Mannor gig. Where you get the tickets/when is it??

As for Pinchy, yeah he rings a bell. I'm sure he came from the same area as Neggy, but I've never bothered with all the Fairwater nutters as they're a bit mental :D

What nights is the training down the Stadium...? I'll come along for sure, but you've got to agree to come along to boxing once we are in shape to take it to the next level!! THEN you will believe my brother!! Then you WILL believe!

I doubt I'll bother with the boxing stuff though mate tbh,I used to train a little with Steve Sims a few years ago down Wilsons gym, steve now has his own gym in Alway. Beleive me I know what it's like  ,I used to physically feel sick & be in agony for days after training with him but now I want to try MMA. I just personally MMA now where as years ago I used to love Boxing.

Yeah I bet, Gary is good. My fitness levels are shot at the mo.
I went to see him fight in CIA when he lost against Yuri Tsarenko, what a fight though, they both fought like fcuk, if I remember rightly Gary broke his left hand in an early round but fought on...Gary's eyes were swollen to shite afterwards.
Calzaghe fought Charles Brewer on the same bill, not as good fight as Locketts though!
I'll find out about the tickets tommorow or Friday mate when i see my bro.

I enjoy both sports and do not think you can compare like for like regarding fitness as they are training for different things. Like them for different reasons You can be a cardio / strength beast but does not mean you are any good at either sport. I take my hat off to both, completly different level of training pain! I can happily run a marathon but few hard training sessions on the mat and I am sure I have astma LOL same with doing some sparing in the ring. Long gone are the days of been 14 and no need for rest Cant remember the full results or who it was but there was a cardio / gym session type contest comparing other martial arts / boxing etc against the MMA and the MMA figher won. My 2p worth :D Would love to do this type of training and have a few friends who train / and fight but after basically shattering the right side of my body many years ago it really is a no no (right arm does not fully straighten so thats always good in an arm bar LOL) DG

Man, the Brewer fight was quality! Dragged on a bit though! I was there that night too :D

Were you there when he boxed Byron Mitchell?? It was hilarious at the weigh in the day before the fight. He stripped naked to make weight, and had his coaches held up a beach towel to protect his modesty. He's on the scales showing off his muscles when one of them drops the towel  That was in front of HBO, SKY Sports, Eurosport, the lot ha ha, he was furious. What a fight tho!! I bricked it when he chinned Joe in the 2'nd, but he got up and KO'd him. Was the best turnaround EVER!!!!

Yeah sad Gary's loss to Tsarenko. He's so dangerous as he's durable and comes on late. Gary learned a few lessons the hard way that night, but he turned it around with a rematch. A shame that that is one of the fights that defines Gary, as he had so much talent/power, and was really badly managed (and heavilly avoided)!! Luckily though he got his break, and I went out to Atlantic City with him to see him fight Kelly Pavlik for the WBO and WBC titles. That was a tough night!!!!!! Not nice seeing a mate get beaten up like that, never seen Gary's chin beaten before or after! But Pavlick was the undisputed world champ, and has only ever lost to Bernard Hopkins so no shame in losing to the best!!

Let me know about the tickets....

BUTTERBEAN fine fellow of a man met him many a time and fort over breakfast

the reason for the delay is because i have just been overseeing a thai class which included some amateur boxers who partake for fitness!

and catching up from an mma event and an amateur boxing show where one of my mma fighters fort for fun!

as you are from gods country you would also know Enzo Maccarinelli and know that johnny phillips his sparing partner and good powerfull boxer (who i have been shareing a changing room with many a time!) an mma fighter who still dables in boxing for fun! and would be the first to admit its a different kind of fitness!!!!

the reason why you know of no names of any high profile mma fighters that can box is because they are MMA FIGHTERS!

look at it regards to calories to try and explain! a boxer will burn slightly less calories per hour than an mma fighter! EXACTLY!! Boxers are fitter. They train themselves for fitness not for bulk. It's easier for them to work that hard

this is where we will never agree cos you opinionated in the definition of fitness and how it is defined! as i said originally two different sports! like compare a marathon runner to 400mt hurdles! boxing does not use as many muscle groups in different angles as mma!!! for example you dont have to grip in boxing!! so in my opinion if you want an fitness all rounder mma! of course you will say boxing!

if you say as you mention Manny Pacquiao a 55kg 30 year old, fights a 36min snooze fest wtf are you mad...? cos he cant finish the guy wearing pillows (he ko'd Ricky Hatton, Erik Morales as well as 35 others!) and you compare him to ken shamrock NO I compared him to Urijah Faber.

Urijah Faber yes i have heard of him and met him nice block his man and my man was on the same card in dreams in japan! not one of the best p4p ever but up there! he lost to mike brown twice! who incidently was matched with my training partner and pulled out! so my partner fort mike browns ATT (american top team) training partner and took his belt from him!

best p4p'ers
anderson silva who i have met
fedor emelianenko met once one of my guys was on the same card as his brother aleksander in russia
GSP
Miguel Angel Torres More like pac mans weight not urijahs incidentally!

my favourite i have had a meal out with the lady is Megumi Fuji and its nice to not be sexist!

BoxRec.com (I've been on that forum for much longer than this one)

Nearly every name you mentioned has no boxing record...... Apart from Butterbean who obviously boxed for years..... And was SH1T so moved to MMA, where he was equally SH1T.

I did write a massive reply, but I just lost it, so accept my succinct (ish) reply....... apologies

Jonny Phillips..... Never heard of him, and again NO PRO BOXING RECORD....... TBH that might be my ignorance though, as there are tons of hard working sparring partners out there who spar for bucks.

You say that the two sports are

two different sports! like compare a marathon runner to 400mt hurdles!

when in your first post it was you who said

an mma fighter can box a boxer cant do mma

So is that not a direct contradiction.....? By your skewed logic a 400m HURDLER can run a Marathon (competetively???(to paraphrase you))and for fun? nice

I don't care mate, I will not have the slightest care telling you what I think on all this, it's my opinion, and I'm game to keep it!! I'd quite relish the debate to be fair!

I will be at this Celtic Mannor gig by all accounts (Danny..... tickets :) ) so if you wish to chat further, that's cool with me. Have you any guys on the bill...??..... Rocky, Hulk Hogan, Wolverine.... Am I close

Foook what have I started?? :groupjump:
This could go on for ages.
At the end of the day if you put a pro boxer in the ring with a pro MMA fighter & tell them to box....the boxer will win but if you ask them to "fight" the MMA fighter will win.
Each person has their own styles and are far superior to eachother in them.
As JJJ said in MMA there are a lot of lucky punches which is true but I've also seen them occur in boxing too, maybe not as many because pinpointing punches is the whole game.
The reason I started the thread was as I'm giving MMA a go,not as a sport to compete but just as I enjoy it & it all helps in real life situations that occur everyday in this day & age. Boxing is a great art & if somebody attacks you in the street or pub/club & you get a good shot then you knock your opponent out with minimal effort but if a boxer gets taken down to the ground where he has no momentum or range of motion then a MMA fighter will certainly walk away unscathed. I think the statistics were somewhere around 85% of streetfights end up on the ground.
Therefore thats why "I" think MMA is better but thats just my opinion. :tt:

Is that post for real?

Or do all the gym freaks/mma peeps/boxers live in a different world? or maybe there is some sort of sinister underworld MMA/boxing training that teaches how to fight in the street?

I'm sort of with JJJ in this.....I can't see how you can win a street fight when pussy footing about on the ground. By that time its been broken up by bouncers/mates and everybody is hugging each other infront of the bib saying 'dont arrest us we're mates' etc etc

85% of street fights end up on the ground

Hmmmm, I would suggest that 85% of street fights end up with a one punch knockout or a glass/weapon used...either that or a ten onto one shoeing.

No offence meant to the people posting here....but lets be serious. The people I know who do doorstaff/streetfight stuff don't box/mma. They are just bloody fruitcases who will go all out to break your thumbs/larynx and the laugh at you when you attempt to fight back.

Edit: for some clarity I guess. Doorstaff/streetfighters I know have been trained in boxing at least (usually in a field bare knuckle fight pikey fashion)

Gary Lockett - yes, he should have had a better Pro career. I can remember him being on the back of Boxing news as an amateur because he was on such a long KO streak. He boxed a mate of mine three times. They won one each, but then in the rubber match Lockett knocked him clean out with a Left hook, boom!

, sounds like Gary! Who was that he faught then..? To the best of my knowledge he only lost once in the seniors (Sean Pepporal I believe), and he was unbeaten for ages as a schoolboy.....

lol, he chinned a guy when he was about 15, and it too the doc/officials about 15mins to bring the guy back around. It got to the point when people were really starting to panic!! Gary included!
