As another point for the OP - I'm considering supercharging, and the money for that vs swapping for a turbo works out similar. However, I know I already have a good car, have fixed the little niggles (current ECU problems notwithstanding) so would rather spend the money on my cherished NA rather than take a chance on buying a new tubby, which may well come with a load of faults.

or a vxr astra

pure torque steering rubbishness

Are you speaking from experience or just from the top gear test of pre production cars?

speaking from experience. i was in love with the astra vxr when i first seen one in black and my friend leant it me for a few hours and i took it back after 30 minutes. very difficult to keep it in a straight line whilst booting it (within the speed limit of course), not very nice to drive at all and the interior is so bland and plasticky.

Horses for courses I guess, although I haven't had the same experience as yourself and have covered 65k miles
Not sure what you mean about the interior
I have driven most of the Astra's competitors and still have too for work...
the Astra and Golf are easily the best built and with a better quality of materials compared with the rest

ref the interior other than the seats you cant tell your in a top of the range car as it is pretty much the same as the rest of the astras (sri etc), whereas in a Focus ST/RS for example you know your in a top range model. and ive been in golf gtis and leon cupras and they seem to handle the power through the front wheels much better than the vxr does. i dont know what the issue is but it just doesnt feel same thrashing it in an astra vxr. maybe its just me being a girl. even my friend who owned the astra said he could see what i meant when he was in the cupra. just feels more controlled in the vag cars.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree
I don't think the Focus ST feels special at all
But then I guess that's why there is so much choice out there

yeah, im not saying the focus is special as it is not. i just mean that theres an improvement on the lower range focus's compared to the ST/RS. ive had a few hot hatches and the VXR just seems irrati. just my oppinion though. drive a S3 and you feel the difference Posted Image

Though the stage 4 VXT with circa 300 BHP delivers power in a rather notchy/lumpy way, it is very usable on a dry road with R888s. Wet roads are very worrying though Posted Image(

One of the reasons I am rebuilding another engine is to put a decent sized turbo on it so that the turbo itself isn't maxed out to the limit, this should allow a smoother offboost to boost transition if correctly mapped. Chris Randal has very good mapping and a GT30R71 and he says his power delivery is extremely good. I hope for the same!

But more lag though if I'm not mistaken? I thought turbo's were most efficient when running at near max capacity? Surely you could just map out big wads of torque to make a quasi-linear torque line?

I see that courtenays do the conversion, but is there anywhere in the north east that is doing the supercharger conversion? Its a long hike to Norwich.

Courtenays are the only UK company offering it afaik. Only other route is self build with or without help of others from here.

insurance was extra £300 for a 21 year old :)

Who with? Was toying with the idea of upgrades next year, didn't think I'd find a company willing to insure a supercharged VX at 21.
