Sure was. I had less hair, less wife and less kids back then :D Question: Can the gearbox and engine be removed and installed as a single unit from a VX (with rear clam off)? Or do they have to be split? I'm assuming it won't be a problem.

If its a turbo, disconnect the rear hubs, swing out of the way so you can remove the drive shafts and the lump will lift out.

Thanks Dave. It's an na. If you can do it with a turbo I'm guessing the na should be a similar job. Any idea on the crane size. I have a 1 ton trolley crane.

So you've no magic then :jump: I'd have to dig out a beer cellar. :D Garage roof is way to low for hoisting a car.

So, final conclusion, whats the best oil for a 2.2 gearbox? GM stuff, Castrol SMX-S, motul 300 gear or another?

GM if available.

Basically, gear oil specifications are not made available to other companies. It is an agreement between the OEM, the lubricant supplier and the additive supplier. The ONLY way to be sure you are getting the correct stuff is to buy the GM stuff.

Does it have a sell by date? You can come and pour it into my gearbox if you want to clear some space in your shed ;)

I use cheapo Halfords stuff. Works fine and takes more torque more regularily than anyone else's gearbox and has done for approx. 40,000 miles. The standard thickness can cause some whiring sounds at high RPM (ie 6000 to 8000), so something thicker would likely be a bit less noisy. Both of my gearbox oil changes have been ultra clear/clean in the past, both the OEM Vauxhall red stuff and cheapo Halfords stuff. In short it's not worth even a second thought IMO, though I sure more people who have a vested interest will argue the toss with an excess of techno babble.

Many thanks to all of you! I'm going to buy either gm stuff or motul 300 gear, depends on what's going to be easier to find and cheaper. Regarding quantity, just a bit over 2??

Yes... sort of. There are suspensions of material, give it a good shake before you use it.
