Well i gave this a go today.

Wow! what a difference, seems every little thing i play with and have a go at makes the world of difference.
I was ready to buy a new steering rack, the bolts seemed tight enough but still moved a bit.

Highly recommend trying this if you have a bit of movement in the steering wheel, tuck your head underneath and grab the joints then move the steering wheel a bit.

Off for a drive now rallly

Can anyone suggest the least painful method for getting to the top bolt on the top UJ? I can't seam to reach it from underneith (while assuming the position of the vx owner) and taking the dash off it doesn't appear immediately visible without removing the whole of the SC :-/

Lucky someone didn't run off with your tools. You'd know they were doing it but by the time you'd extracted yourself from the footwell they'd be long gone.

Mine seemed tight but nipping them Up a bit more completely eliminated the knocking feeling I got driving down a bumpy road.

Best I've got is this awkward little fecker behind the pedals/

There's another one further up the shaft but is less likely to develop any play.

According to TIS, it's meant to be 35Nm but I think the usual is just to do it sensibly tight. You may well not be able to tighten it any further without hanging a gorilla off the end of the spanner, in which case the play in the steering is likely to be in the rack itself.

Bottom bolt of the top UJ usually can just be reached with slim spanners. The top bolt of the top UJ can usually only be tightened if you remove the steering column completely from the car. But.. This one is usually not needed. The bottom UJ and lower connection of the top UJ are all splined connections to the shafts which can give play when not very tight, but the top connection of the top UJ to the steering column is not splined, but a half-moon shape. This tends to be much more robust fitting and usualyl does not give much play. Another possible cause of play next to the shaft/UJ's and rack itself can also be the upper steering column. It has a collapsible design and has some nylon breakaway parts that collapse in an accident and allow it to telescope inward. These can break/fracture if the steering column has been subjected to impacts (eg. when people take off the steering wheel and use a hammer) or simply because of age. This usually also results in play in the steering. Bye, Arno.
