An early 996 3.4 with an engine conversion (not Porsche) appeals to me..
In fact, isn't the 3.4 a much more reliable engine, and doesn't suffer any where like as many terminal issues as the early 3.6's?

Yep apparently 3.4 996s and all 986 Boxsters don't have the bore scoring issue.

Could be wrong, but 911 3.4 is a M96 and the Cayman 3.4 is a M97 engine, so different engine models effectively.
It seems the larger displacement variant of each type seem to be less reliable - the early Boxster 2.5 and 2.7 aren't too bad (I've read) or have the same issues as the 3.2 (M96).

Correct. It could all be internet exaggeration, think of the amount of 911s you see driving around day in day out...

What isn't these days? A few people get a problem and want the world to know about it, tens of thousands who don't get the same problem are just happy and remain quietIt could all be internet exaggeration,

Cayman is far better value for money but all are tough to find with a decent spec.
If only someone had one for sale right now
