just phone for a service for my breitling super ocean 2 and was quoted £800.00 and 8 weeks minimum !!!

Well, a lot's been said about they 'psychology of expensive watch wearing, so as a Rolex wearer of many years I think it's about time to come clean.  I bought my first Rolex (submariner) in Singapore years ago and in those days no-one knew what a Rolex was, it carried zero kudos.  I liked the design, and it could take anything you could throw at it.  So I stuck with the make because I like the design and it's ruggedness.  Epistemologically I admit I have questioned whether my liking of  Rolex designs is a preference borne of habituation, and I think it probably is.  Then, Rolex became 'known' and people started buying them as displays of wealth.  So now, some people do and some people don't . However, sadly I can say almost unequivocally that most people who buy gold Rolex are the biggest bunch of 'look at me and what I'm wearing' tossers I have ever met.  I have lost count of the number of times a gold Rolex wearer, upon seeing my Sub or GMT 2 or TT or Kermit or whatever, has ostentatiously thrust his/her gold monstrosity under my nose in order to demonstrate 'oneupmanship'.  These are people who are complete strangers and it happens time and time again with monotonous regularity.  As a consequence I wouldn't have a gold Rolex as a gift, I have come to detest them and my experience supports the point Nev has made.  Admittedly I bought a TT sub when they came out but that was because I liked the blue face, and it's still my favourite watch though I seldom wear it. I have an acquaintance who has a gold Rolex with the face and bezel encrusted with diamonds, and his wife something similar.  They're nice people (well he is anyway) but to me their watches are ugly ostentatious bling to the point of being offensive. 30k that looks like $hit.  These are people who don't understand the meaning of 'less' being 'more'. SS Rolex wearers are a different kettle of fish, some buy for kudos and some don't, they just like watches like me.  I've been wearing a Rolex for so long it's become just a 'watch', the watch I wear because I like the design, I like the way it looks, and it never even occurs to me what anyone else may think about it.  If anyone asks (which they do occasionally) I say “Real?  Good God no! - cost me £20 on a beach in Spain”, and they usually nod knowingly. I hardly ever take it off, I wear it 24 hours a day seven days a week and the only time I take it off is if I need to adjust the date when the month has less than 31days in it, or when I'm working on the car or something similar, or if I need to clean it.  Now, here's an excellent point.  This afternoon I was mowing the garden and took it off when I was struggling to get the mower started for the first time this season; presently the watch is still in the garden in my working padded jacket somewhere, but I'm not quite sure where.  Realising this, am I going to rush out and search for it?  No, I'll leave it there till I let the dog out about 2300 and, knowing me, by then I'll have forgotten so it'll stay out all night. It's not a big deal, it's just a watch.

Here's my current every day watch. It's all beat up and scratched because I found it in a river whilst on holiday! It looked to have been in there a while, was only just poking out the gravel fully under water.

that's how all my watches used to end up, so I stopped wearing them ~20 years ago (plus other reasons).

Good posts Oblomov, I can appreciate the engineering in some of these watches although I don't really understand why Rolex is so highly rated.

I dont have a Rolex and would never buy one. I hate the design I think they look awful all of them bit old fashioned. Also every single person you ever meet will think that you bought it from a lookie lookie man in Tenerife in 2006 on a stag do for £25. The brand to me has been completely devalued by the endless copies but they still seem well regarded amongst proper "watchists" which I dont consider myself to be one.  

There are a lot of more stylish watches around of very good quality that look better to me. Hublot is a controversial one but Tag turn out a good selection, IWC, Bell & Ross etc there are a good few that come up on kickstarter as well. Given that you only really need to buy a Swiss automatic mechanism and build a decent chassis round it there are lots of people having a go and turning out some nice looking kit. I have a couple of the above mentioned but I'm thinking of going off piste with future purchases and go with some of these unknown kickstarter ones. You never know there might be one or two that are worth a bit in a few years plus its cheaper and you can get something a bit more interesting.
