Home brew kit received as a Chrimbo present, so will look to set that off tomorrow. Need to get some brew sugar first as that didn't come n the kit that Mel got me.... As well as a hydrometer. As a matter of interest how long will it keep in a pressure barrel, as I am only going to get into bother with 40pints available at a time,I less it will keep for a few weeks at a time... Though I am already planning on cutting out the side panels of two of my sheds and fabricating an archway between them to turn them into an garden man cave for the summer.

It will vary with secondary fermentation temperature, type of beer, how sterile you kept stuff etc. I've gt beer from a brew in early July in mini barrels that is still fine. You will do one brew, if you enjoy it you will then do more with bottles you source from anywhere  I plan on doing my next one in late march

I have around 8/9 bottles of "Sol" with my beer in still from the 1st batch I ever made. They aint blown up, but they are around 5 years old now (so very much doubt they are drinkable!) Found them in the shed and was a proper cobweb and dust blown off moment like it was some £10,000 bottle of wine from the 1600's!

I am a real ale drinker anyway and my best mates dad has run off loads of homebrew over the years - so I am familiar with the product, but not with the creation. I suppose only time will tell.

I also got a home brew kit for Christmas. Started it off on Sunday, so will be looking to bottle it come the weekend (hopefully). Should the fermentation bucket be vented at all during the fermentation process, or should it remain sealed? I don't have an airlock, but the lid does have a rubber bung in the top of the lid. Cheers Chris

sealed is better to ensure no contaminants find there way in, one of my bins just has a Lid and the other has a airlock water filled s bend.

I am just starting a 40 pint kit of lager this morning. For some reason the top-up with cold water to 23L marker always seems to be missing on the brew vessel.

My mate has gone mad for the home brew. It's lovely stuff, I'm not a fan of beer, but I can drink the stuff he makes. He spends a fortune on it and makes loads all the time, either kits or from scratch, he has done both. The made from scratch ale was spot on, really enjoyed that. He has just bottled a stout he has made from scratch too, can't wait to try that
