On the German forum there was some good discussion some time ago.

General RSR: 215/45/17 will rub, 215/40/17 wont.

I have no idea though if this was on a lowered VX or not. I'm going for the 215/40/17 & 235/40/17 combo RSR's and an ABS switch.

I would go for the 215/40/17 as it has an extra 1mm of tread , 7.5mm  , its overall diam is 22mm smaller than the 45 profile

As I've said before, when people talk about rubbing it is sometimes only the central rivet for the arch liner, and even then it's only when on full lock. It only happened on mine when reversing into my drive where I had to use full lock, but I was doing about 2 mph. If you can take someone up on an offer like mine above then I would certainly try them before deciding the 45's are no good.

Ok this might be a good idea to fill up for future ref on 17" wheels specifically ATS DTC's. Feel free to add more tyres or amend.

 Toyo R888

215/45   =  624mm x 216mm --- ( Will rub on arch liner rivets at rear of front wheel, only on full lock, may need a cut out.)

245/40   =  627mm x 250mm --- ( May limit how low you go on the rear of car due to wheel arch, which may lead to arch extensions)

Federal 595RS-R

215/45   =  625mm x 219mm --- (Based dimensions and above these are prob going to rub quite a bit and will require cutouts)

215/40   =  603mm x 222mm --- (Untested but dimensions look favorable, may run into ABS probs if appropriate rear is not used )

235/40   =  619mm x 238mm --- (Best option available in this tyre for rear based on dimensions)

235/45   =  643mm x 240mm --- (Dimensions tell me this is a no go, diameter too big, likely to rub at ride height under 135mm)

Yokohama AD08R

215/45   =   ?         x      ?      --- (Currently fitted but not driven yet, best match for 245/40 rear)

205/45   =   ?         x      ?      --- (Best match for 235/40 rear)

245/40   =   ?         x      ?      --- (Currently fitted but not driven yet, best match for 215/45 front)

235/40   =   ?         x      ?      --- (Best match for 205/45 front)

Some good information chaps.

Is the AD08R like the R1R, as R1R's really arent the best for trackdays if the sun comes out. Theyre a really great all rounder but you have to do far shorter sessions and they will still wear heavily. Even last week on a very cold day they suffered notably on track.

Can anyone add measurement for the Avon ZZR 215 40 17 and 235 40 17 (thiough I assume similar to the others) as in these sizes theyre only around £120 more than the Federals and almost certainly a more serious track tyre.

Martin s

ps I'm happy to cut away and will probably have to whatever I buy, and on that subjext wheres the best/chepest cut outs as I know some people wree using handle inserts and all sorts.

I think the AD08R are a good all round tyre for occasional tracking and road use but suspect they will suffer on longer track sessions.

For cut outs see my pic on previous page. Although that did require cutting the arch liner as well.

I can make them wet laid in carbon. I'm not very fast though so don't expect to get them in a couple of days :P

I would not use the cheapo method and a after looking at mine again I am considering essentially properly building the recess/slight concave curve in to the sill and repainting, liner will then just pull back to that, negating the need to cut into the arch liner as well and will look a lot more OEM ish. It is also in an area that you could get away with a home can spray job.

How low is your car and do you have arch cut outs?

I do wonder whether I just bite the bullet buy the tyres and if they are too wide on the front deal with it.

I'll more than likely go 235 rears and arch extensions are a no go.

As for 215/40 (22mm difference)???  That seems a hell of a lot for even the 4 channel abs to cope with?

I believe abs starts acting up once wheel + tyre difference is more then (or near) 5% from oem.

Ride height is not the prob on front, its purely that the arc the tyre makes when turning interferes with the sill/arch liner. I do have cut outs and as said before the best sizes are either 245/40 and 215/45 or 235/40 and 205/45 if you can get them in your choice of tyes. Mixing may cause abs issues. Its not the diff from standard but altering the ratio too much that will cause abs issues. The front imo should be 1-2% smaller than rear idealy. I did not require rear arch extensions for 245's but its tight. Having 2.2 deg neg camber helped.

I have 215/45 245/40 on at the mo, but they are falkens. It's bloody tight on front and rear, front only catches very slightly on full lock and although rears don't catch, I reckon they could on a big compression.

My mistake. Would have to be 225 rear and 215 fr avon zzr's, guess not a good setup. So best options as defined earlier. I have 4 channel abs but problems with my 888's rubbing on track now but am now prepared that its going to be 215 fronts and some grief.
