What's the latest thinking on tyre options for standard wheels?  A few years back people were using Goodyear GSD3s to fit the awkward, skinny fronts. Thanks

I think some have fitted 195's to the oem fronts - this should give more options.

Just had a conversation with a local tyre place and the guy there said that 195s were a bad idea on the 175 rims...

"An emergency direction change could result in the tyre popping off the rim".  He couldn't recommend it and wouldn't commit to fitting them until he'd seen the tyres and wheels!

Rubbish, i've been running 195's on the front for a while now with no problems what so ever. I have Goodyear Eagle F1's and have been really pleased with them especially in the wet. They seem to work ok on track too.

I'm about to embark on this. I'm swaying with continentals front and rear so they match :)

They fit, people have been doing it for a while, remember the bloke on the phone may have a lot of experience with tyres in general but won't have as much specific experience as the forum collective (even if they don't always agree). Let me k ow if you are looking to get them fitted locally, I might know a place.

Yep, loads of folk done it for years, he is talking utter bollocks,it's ok to do on the tyre charts. I was on the track with 195 F1 s on the front all day last week. I rate the Brigestones S001 for the back, great road tyre and A rated in the wet which is what you want as it's pissing down all the time. I'm on my second set. H

It is generally accepted that you can run a tyre one or two size either larger or smaller than standard for any given rim size.  I've been going two sizes larger on all my cars for more years than I care to remember simply because it makes it much less likely that you will curb your alloys because of the extra tyre protrusion.  Initially with the VX on standard rims I didin't do this because I (wrongly) accepted the prevailing (at the time 12 years ago) opinion that it couldn't be done because the tyres were so low profile.  This was then found to be incorrect and the two size larger or smaller option applies.  I've been running 195s ever since.

Rubbish and Bollocks are a bit harsh, the bloke is giving the same sensible advice anyone in his position would do. Why would he go out on a limb and recommend changing tyre sizes on a car he's likely never worked on and opening a can of worms. How many times a week do you think people in garages get asked this type of question about all sorts of fitments from wider to stretched to lowered, copy and paste answers are required and that's exactly what he gave. It's incorrect as we know from experience but how is he supposed to know that?

I have fitted Bridgestone RE050A's on standard rims.

195/45R17 on the front, which are a special fitment for the Suzuki Swift Sport.

225/45R17 on the rear, which were a factory fit tyre for some Astra's and BMW's.

I chose RE050A's because they were the only tyres, that I could find, that would fit, with a matching tread pattern. I chose 195/45R17's (same O.D. as originals) for the front because I was not able to source the factory size 175/55R17.

Some tyre fitters will not fit 195/45R17's to the VX220 rim as it is narrower than the Bridgestone recommended fitment. While not ideal, they fit fine on the standard rim with no adverse effects.

Technical information

Overall Diameter, 608 mm. Permitted Rim Width(s), 06.00-07.50 in. Tread Depth, 7.2 mm.

I'm guessing the car is for sale and a cheaper solution is required.

Rubbish and Bollocks are a bit harsh, the bloke is giving the same sensible advice anyone in his position would do. Why would he go out on a limb and recommend changing tyre sizes on a car he's likely never worked on and opening a can of worms. Haven't you links to a tyre fitting company or do you own one, can you offer vx owners a deal on tyres? Which do you recommend?

I wish I owned it!

I have helped people in the past and will continued to do so where people contact me. We now own what was North Staffs Tyre and Battery in Tunstall, Longton and Newcastle Under Lyme if you need owt lol.

I don't make recommendations because it can only ever be a personal opinion, its as sweeping a question as asking a car sales man, or a motoring journalist which car he recommends

Having ran bridges for since 2004 I decided try the Eagle F1's on the front only this year, I have to say there is a definite improvement over the std bridges in terms of grip. They look great on the rim too and of course have bonus of being a few less ££'s. I have had no issues in terms of performance, the only issue that I did have was that ATS euromaster were reluctant to fit them at first, I had to sign something to say I had requested a tyre size change so there was no comeback on them.

We will have to agree to disagree I think  it's rubbish to say a sudden change in direction will make the tyre come off if you fit 195s as we know, if you don't know how can you give advice ? He doesn't have to go out on a limb or recommend anything just hold his hands up and say I don't know because he doesn't simple as that, someone without .Org experience would take it as gospel from a professional and never fit them. So it's Bollocks in my view  .

The oversize tyre charts show if you go from standard to the 195/45 at 65 mph you speedo will show 63.2 mph so when it's showing 130 your not doing that
