The front and rear are different as standard as they are different widths.

Watching this thread with interest as I'm due new rears and don't want to lose the OEM alloys. However, I do not want different tread patterns. That's unnaceptable on a sports car to me personally. Hopefully I can find a better solution than the standard RE040,s? Cheers Jon

I don't get why,the fronts and rears do different jobs.

It may have been a crude way of writing it but fronts are on an undriven steered axle,  rears are on a solid driven axle, then theres the geometry, weight distribution etc etc. the front and rears are operating under very different conditions

Im not sure how to take that but lets put it this way, if they are doing the same job it shouldn't make any difference if you put the 175/55X17s on the rear and vice versa, let me know how you get on.

I had the GSD3's fitted to the fronts yesterday, they feel completely different to the worn set I had on, loads more confidence in the wet now. The steering feels really light though, might be down to the silly pressures garages normally put in, I haven't had a chance to check them yet.

I run quite an aggressive Geo so the inner edge had worn badly on my old set. That's one downfall of them, they do seem to wear quite quickly. Shouldn't be a problem for most people that drive their VX about 10 times a year...  :poke:

Looking at my options to fit on the standard alloys myself this year but like I said earlier I want to match tread patterns all round. Understand what you guys are saying but it's important to me for aesthetics if nothing else... What pressures are you guys running with the Bigger tyre on the front? Should you still run the normal 24 front and 26 rear settings do you think? Jon

Gents. Please let me know what tyre pressures you guys feel are best with the slightly wider fronts? Cheers, Joj

That too is tyre and driver and environment dependent !

Things like tyre compound (stickyness), sidewall strength, speed/warm up usage, summer/winter usage all vary how much pressure I put in them. If it's summer and I am about to go rampaging over the Welsh mountains at dawn I put about 22f & 24r (that's when the tyres are cold). For normal round town use maybe 25f & 27r. For motorway slogging (and economy) 30f & 32r would be quite acceptable at a guess.

Tyres like the R888 have very bulgy sidewalls that flex nicely. Others like the V70a have more squarecut wall that seemed firmer to me if I remember correctly.

Then lastly, I find different garage pumps show different readings by 1 or 2 PSI quite commonly.

25psi on the front is a good all rounder for starters.

Hi Jon

Not long till March 5 when you will be able to take a look at the Goodyear F1's I have on mine.

Well pleased with the way they feel, and plenty of grip round Blyton track even in the wet!

See you soon

Ian

I would suggest you contacting a local owner who runs 16 inch front wheels and whatever tyres they have fitted at the time and see if they will lend them to you for an afternoon to see what difference it makes on your car....

This might make all this thread irrelevant.

Kindly, Paul

Cheers for your response all. Eagle F1s it is then as I really want to avoid changing alloys. I feel this is my best compromise and will try 25f 26r to begin with. Thanks, Joj

Had to order the continental sports contact 3's in the end. The F1 tyres mentioned here have directional treads and to mis match the treads is not ideal after a lot of research.... Thought it worth mentioning that the 195 45 17 front tyre is not currently available. I managed to order some from black circles in the end but all the major tyre suppliers could not get them in. Had quite a job..... Fitting in April 2nd and can then give feedback on how they feel.

You will not be disappointed with ContiSportContact3 tyres - I've been running them for a couple if years and they have performed well on road and track.
