so have keyed off and back on to jump start in 5th as there's always been something behind me.

you should always try and avoid bump starting a z22se engine, the earlier timing chain tensioner relies on oil pressure and the chain can jump a tooth.

However, the latest 'dome head' tensioners have a much improved internal spring tension system which should prevent the chain from jumping thumbsup

Shame you live so far away (as many do) but have a chat with Jon at Courtenays, he knows the car well & may be able to offer some suggestions

Thanks, I'll see how it goes with the map sensor first. Do the tensioners get upgraded when changed or is that not possible??

just have a look and see whether it has the 'domed' tensioner.

http://z22se.co.uk/t...-engines.15533/

All genuine chain kits come with them, most pattern kits do not.

Always avoid pattern chain kits .... at all costs

Chain & tensioner was changed on 2013 by Courtenays using genuine parts 👍 However, thinking back, a similar incident happened pre SC days back in 2014 which turned out to be a chamfered wire which had come loose and was rubbing on the exhaust heat shield. May be worth checking all the wires between EGR valve which lead down that way

Looks like I'll be calling Courtnays as the map sensor made no difference either (thanks for the sensor Martin). I couldn't see anything obvious wrong with the wiring but only glanced over it really. If there was a a faulty signal from the throttle, am I right in thinking this would be obvious when looking at live data for that channel on a scangauge? Also is there any way to tell if its boost or throttle position related on a sc car? Fault only occurs when you are approx over 50% pedal, or when you hear the sc start to load up? Thanks Dan

I had a similar issue but on a turbo. New coil pack and spark plugs cured it. (Not sure which was the issue as I replaced both a the same time)

It might be over-fueling if the problem is manifesting at high load and a wide range of revs. No idea why though.

So finally found a bit of time to look at the car and bit of a think (had a lot on recently!) Just been for a drive and noticed at low RPM and WOT all seems OK, then misfires at random RPM each time and to different degrees, sometimes aggressive and other times not so much. This is making me think it could be something simple like the fuel filter as there are still no fault codes showing, although saying that surely there a lambda associated code would trigger? Any ideas?? Thanks Dan

Just seen in the file that it was changed 3 years ago so very unlikely to be that.

Finally found time to take the car for a spin with replacement coilpack

Where did you get your replacement coilpack from?

I got a used one from a breaker and have ended up putting the old one back on, I'm meeting sutol this evening to rule that out as he has a spare. I've had a coil pack go on my last sc vx which was a very repeatable misfire but I'll let you know how it goes tonight.

I had a misfire over 5k before swapping, hence indeed to try another.

China versions also give problems. OEM advised on these.

crank sensor, or connectors in the loom

Right, just started her up to meet sutol to triple check coil pack and it sounded like it was running on three cylinders. Good thing is, I have lost the map sensor signal on the scangauge so have something to work with, tried the spare sensor and no difference so looks like a loom issue. There's a slight kink on the green wire from the centre pin on the map sensor connector. I've just been trying to find out the pinout from ecu to map sensor so I can check it but couldn't find anything????

Not sure why it wasn't running well the other day at idle but that seemed to sort itself out, pretty quickly, (it was straight after an oil change?) however still have the high load issue. I went to see sutol yesterday (thanks again for your help) to triple check the coil pack which ruled that out as made no difference, also tried a different throttle body but the one on mine is smaller so couldn't try that as the bolt pattern is slightly different. What I did work out after driving on a dual carriageway is that it is more engine speed related as it will do it while cruising if engine speed gets to around 3500rpm, its just less noticeable as its under light load. It feels like hitting a rev limiter when at full load. I have done the following with no effect: Replaced coil pack Replaced CPS (great design fitting it there) Replaced plugs (old ones all looked fine) Blanked egg off Replaced map sensor Buzzed loom to pin out on map sensor All live data on scanguage is stable and ties up with gauges. No fault codes present. I'll try getting hold of John again at Courtney's (keep missing him) as he knows the car well, also going to try and sort a better scan tool to see if anything shows up as I've only seen a code relating to the map sensor but I think that was after I unplugged it (Muppet!) Any ideas would be much appreciated as I'm running out of them, I am gathering some decent spares though if anyone else needs to rule things out while diagnosing running issues. Cheers Dan

...also put some contact cleaner on loom of doom and most other connectors.

Also noticed a smell of fuel when misfiring at full load yesterday as the roof was off.

might be worth getting another z22se throttle body (if it's not the 68mm SC version)

It might also be a blocked fuel filter or an injector starting to fail.

Probably worth getting the exhaust cat checked to make sure it has not started to collaspe, but thats a long shot.
