Depends in which way the cat is knackered. If it collapses and the internals don't blow out through the exhaust then it will knacker the engine since the exhaust gasses will have limited scope for passing through. However, you will know if this is the case since the power will also be drastically reduced.

It showldn't injest it on the overun, but that is the small risk you run.

Depends to be honest on 'how' it fails. If the cat blows out in pieces then no, if the material lodges in the pipe and blocks it you'll potentially damage the motor.

Ask MartinS he killed his piston rings by running a dead cat But as above if the cat is disintegrating and falling out then it will probably be ok...

Ithink the map was rich, bore washed the cylinders and melted the cat.

Thanks chaps. From the symptoms (which are very similar to Dan r's) I'm guessing the cat is collapsing - not breaking down and being blown out. New cat time. :)

My piston rings were not ever killed by cat failure, they hadn't bedded in properly and glazed the bores as I was told to run it in over a 1000 miles with regular oil swaps whereas I should have been told to run it in over 100 miles in a totally different way.

I had 3 cat failures in all, one due to excess oil when the rings didn't bed in, two due to excess use (not by me) on rolling roads as they don't get cooled enough.

Its rare a cat will block totally but its not a great idea to run around with it if it is potentially blocked.

If you have to fit a new cat, the best (and cheapest) are ones off a vx turbo. The Dutch have them running upto 360 bhp I belive and mine was running 290 at the end with one of those .

When swapping the belt, make sure to 'not' buy good ones. I had lots of trouble with squeal from Conti ones but the cheap and nasty ones from local car spares places were always good.

Its most likely the flexi broken if there are bits inside rattling around.

Foxy, there is a spare belt "in a box" that came with the car - that belt doesn't squeal. The batman fitted the squeaky one first, then changed it to the spare "in the box", but when I got the alternator changed, the garage put the squeaky one back on...

Good to see the car back out where it belongs - I loved Brands, never got a chance to try the GP layout, one of my best TDs was there in the rain with cars spinning out all over the place.
